Description of Work

The Associate Warden supports the Warden in directing custody and institutional operations at a medium-custody correctional facility housing male offenders. The position oversees facility security offender housing staffing resources food service operations internal investigations and related operational functions to maintain safe consistent and policy-compliant operations. The role provides guidance to correctional supervisors and serves as the Facility Head during extended absences of the Warden.

Key Duties Include:
- Direct daily custody security offender housing and institutional operations.
- Manage the custody section including food service operations and applicable restrictive housing functions.
- Provide supervisors with guidance on correctional policies security procedures and operational requirements.
- Review incident reports offender requests security concerns and other matters requiring management-level action.
- Assign conduct or review internal investigations involving critical incidents employee conduct or facility operations.
- Allocate personnel and operational resources based on staffing levels security risks and institutional priorities.
- Coordinate emergency responses or other non-routine operations requiring timely management decisions.
- Serve as the Facility Head during extended periods of absence of the Warden.

To be considered for a Correctional Associate Warden position ALL applicants must:
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check

  • Possess a valid drivers license

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience directing custody or security operations within a correctional institution.

  • Documented experience reviewing incident reports or conducting internal investigations involving correctional operations employee conduct or security concerns.

  • Proven experience applying correctional policies related to offender housing restrictive housing institutional security or emergency response.

  • Demonstrated experience supervising correctional managers or front-line supervisors through coaching policy guidance performance management or disciplinary processes.

  • Documented experience allocating staffing or operational resources based on institutional needs security risks or emergency conditions.

About The Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum medium close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety security and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff program facilitators and administrative personnel.
