The Behavioral Health Clinician provides comprehensive behavioral health assessment diagnosis treatment planning counseling crisis intervention and care coordination for justice-involved adults with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions participating in the Recovery and Reentry Program. The clinician delivers evidence-based trauma-informed person-centered services within correctional facilities and community settings to promote recovery facilitate successful trauma-informed person-centered services within correctional facilities and community settings to promote recovery successful community reintegration reduce overdose risk and decrease recidivism. The clinician collaborates closely with correctional staff medical providers peer recovery specialists case managers probation/parole and community treatment providers to ensure continuity of care from incarceration through community reentry.This is a grant-funded position that may terminate with the ending of the grant funding.


  • Masters Degree from a program that prepares individuals to practice counseling (60-hr Masters Program) which is offered by a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting agency. (Re: 54.1-3500 of the Code of Virginia)
  • No experience required.
  • Resident in Professional Counseling Supervisee in Clinical Social Work Resident in Licensed Marriage Family Therapy Resident in Substance Abuse Treatment or eligibility to apply for residency.

Note: New hires will be expected to apply for clinical supervision and residency within 30 days of hire.

Related Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of evidenced based practices to include but not limited to; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); emergency interventions; family group and individual therapies; psychosocial education; risk assessments; sex offender treatment; substance abuse interventions; etc. Knowledge of community mental health and public health in order to provide advocacy and enhance an individuals treatment and access to community resources; Knowledge of the principles procedures techniques trends and literature related to mental health intellectual disabilities and substance abuse; Knowledge of psychiatric/medical medications/treatments; Analyze situations accurately and develop appropriate responses of techniques; Communicate effectively in order to facilitate treatment and relay information to others as part of an interdisciplinary team; Perform clinical interviews in order to obtain information and to formulate appropriate treatment plans; Ability to develop and maintain therapeutic relationships; Ability to promote positive collaborative and professional working relations among co-workers and representatives in the community; Ability to record data and complete documentation within established expectations and by communicated deadlines; Ability to respond effectively to changes in the work environment in a positive and professional manner

Willing and available to work modified schedules (weekends holiday etc.) as required. Ability to participate in and successfully pass behavioral intervention training; includes both verbal de-escalation skills and physical skills techniques to be utilized with consumers as needed. Ability to drive and must possess a valid drivers license. May be called upon to travel to any Horizon worksite; transport clients provide services to client @other locations. Regular attendance at trainings and Horizon meetings may require travel to a variety of Horizon sites.
