Summary :
The Clinical Laboratory Specialist Team Leader performs complex pre-analytic analytic and post-analytic processes and may perform specimen collection. Uses established knowledge base of clinical indications for laboratory testing and processing.

Job Description:

- Hours
o At least 0.5 FTE on Bench
o Occasional off shifts (PMs weekends)
o Flexibility for call-ins
o Regular start time on off-bench days

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Performs complex processes including collecting bone marrow performing and staining pathology frozen specimens performing EKGs processing and resulting send outs and resulting moderately complex testing.

  • Obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients following proper identification protocols and appropriate techniques to maintain the integrity of the specimens and prioritizes collections to meet established turnaround times.

  • Supports patient testing by performing waived testing loading analyzers and performing lab functions as needed to meet patient demands.

  • Adheres to OSHA and ThedaCare department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment.

  • Provides training for new lab and non-lab team members to retain top talent.

  • Performs specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed including entering physicians orders processing cancelations and entering add-on tests to ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Enters activates and/or reviews physicians order in the system with accuracy for patient safety and quality.

  • Maintains supplies and assists with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities.

  • Performs special specimen collections (i.e. legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow up as required by law.

  • Collaborates with multiple disciplines to effectively and efficiently provide patient care and achieve the desired patient outcomes.

  • Applies critical thinking to assess plan and implement day-to-day operations and communicates updates to team members.

  • Delegates team member duties in relation to patient needs and manages evolving demands from team members physicians equipment and scheduling.

  • Manages call schedule revenue and usage audits and meeting minutes and is a super user with department diagnostic equipment and supplies.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or GED preferred

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • Four years of laboratory experience or a Bachelors degree


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to move freely (standing stooping walking bending pushing and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance

  • Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in a medical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids chemicals and biohazardous materials

  • Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments

  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock

  • Occasional contact with aggressive and or combative patients

  • Use of computers throughout the work day

  • Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands wrists and fingers
