CLERK II - Onondaga Community College Department of Campus Safety and Security

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the general supervision of the Manager of the Department of Campus Safety and Security an employee in this class performs many of the duties of a Public Service Dispatch Aide. Included in these duties are the operation of a two-way radio the use of a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system monitoring and use of the security camera system answering emergency and non-emergency phone lines and dispatching appropriate emergency services as necessary. Employees in this class have the authority to dispatch Campus Law Enforcement Officers and communicate with Onondaga County 911 Onondaga County Fire and Ambulance.

Generally an employee in this class follows prescribed procedures particularly with regards to determining what constitutes an emergency. Any changes in these prescribed procedures are made by the Shift Supervisor or the assigned Duty Chief.

  • The work requires the application of varied and involved procedures and the frequent use of a higher degree of independent judgement.
  • The work requires some clerical duties data entry and routine work such as answering questions and providing directions to the general public and campus community.
  • Employees in this class must be courteous in dealing with the public and be able to verbally give information clearly.
  • Employees in this class do not exercise supervision. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Receive incoming emergency and non-emergency calls from various sources to include landlines the colleges blue light system emergency boxes and personal mobile devices.
  • Monitors receives and transmits communications over a two-way radio. Dispatches Campus Officers and Security Guards as necessary.
  • Coordinates with Onondaga County Emergency Communications (911) via radio and phone to request and coordinate external Police Fire/Rescue and EMS services as necessary.
  • Monitors the College fire alarm system for single and full activation fire alarms. Dispatches Officers and Emergency services as necessary.
  • Checks accuracy and completeness of documents presented for filing recording or other administrative actions; assigns sequential DR numbers for all calls for service to maintain an accurate and accessible filing system; issues various parking permits.
  • Establishes and maintains a permanent CAD card for all calls for service received to include nature of complaint name address phone number of complainant officer assigned and final disposition.
  • Utilizes the college security camera system conducts remote surveillance specific to emergency calls and activity on campus; monitors and reports camera problems archives CCTV footage into evidence system retrieves and maintains CCTV evidence as necessary.
  • Fields information requests over the phone or in-person from varying populations to include Students Faculty/staff community members outside agencies and vendors. Assist with requests by retrieving information and/or defers individuals to the appropriate personnel or departments on Campus.
  • May occasionally type a variety of routine forms or related documents.
  • May operate office machines.
Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Promotion: One (1) year of permanent competitive class status as a Clerk I Typist I Stenographer I Account Clerk I Library Clerk I Data Entry Equipment Operator WIC Assistant WIC Assistant (Spanish speaking) Public Health Assistant or Training Unit assistant.

Open-competitive:

  • Two (2) years of clerical work experience which involved the performance of routine office tasks such as keeping of records and accounts correspondence recording/entering (keying) and retrieving data and/or information in accordance with prescribed procedures.

Note: Post secondary education in a regionally accredited or New York State registered educational institution with a concentration in secretarial science may be substituted for the above-described experience on a year-for-year basis.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Ability to discern actual emergency calls from routine calls and to dispatch proper authorities to handle the situation or emergency.
  • Ability to learn department codes and standard operating procedures.
  • Good knowledge of general office terminology procedures equipment and clerical techniques. Ability to maintain a variety of clerical records including logs lists and simple filing.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to speak with good diction and a clear speaking voice.
  • Ability to use good judgement tact and courtesy in responding to phone calls.
  • Ability to deal with the general public including stress situations.
  • Ability to make minor decisions in accordance with laws and regulations and to apply these to work problems.
Additional Information:

Pay Rate: $23.45 / per hour

Current open shift:

  • Part-time:C-line (3:00pm - 11:00pm) Saturday and Sunday evenings.
    • Total hours per week: 14
