The Civil Engineer II designs manages and overseesconstruction projects for City-owned movable and fixed bridges parkingstructures and buildings.
Project Planning Design and Contract Development
- Perform planning design analysis and preparation of contract documents for the construction of City-owned bridges buildings and other structures.
- Prepare engineering designs and plans using design software and drawing tools such as AutoCAD MicroStation and Civil 3D.
- Prepare specifications and cost estimates for construction and rehabilitation projects.
- Ensure engineering activities are compliant with environmental safety and other governmental regulations.
- Perform structural analyses and engineering calculations to ensure compliance with applicable design standards and codes.
- Develop project scopes schedules and technical documentation for capital improvement projects.
- Coordinate project design with other City divisions and utilities.
Inspection and Structural Assessments
- Conduct repair and safety inspections and prepare assessment reports for bridges and other structures.
- Conduct field investigations to evaluate existing conditions and recommend repair or rehabilitation solutions.
- Document structural deficiencies and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Monitor the condition of City-owned structures and maintain inspection records.
Project Coordination and Consultant Review
- Coordinate assigned projects with governmental agencies consultants and private parties.
- Review contract documents correspondence and reports from consultants and outside agencies.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies to obtain required permits and approvals.
Construction Administration and Engineering Support
- Prepare special studies engineering reports and investigations.
- Review shop drawings contract modifications requests for information (RFI) payments etc. during the project construction phase.
- Evaluate contractor requests for substitutions change orders and claims for compliance with contract requirements.
- Provide engineering support during construction to resolve technical issues and ensure compliance with project plans and specifications.

- Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from a school of engineering whose program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or verified equivalency.
- One year of professional civil engineering experience performing functions related to the position.
- Good driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
- Valid Wisconsin drivers license at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

Technical
- Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology.
- Knowledge of structural engineering principles related to bridges parking structures buildings and other public infrastructure.
- Knowledge of bridge inspection methods structural condition assessments and maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of mathematics such as arithmetic algebra geometry calculus statistics and the ability to make accurate calculations.
- Knowledge and prediction of physical principles laws and their interrelationships and application to understanding fluid dynamics.
- Ability to review engineering plans shop drawings and technical submittals for accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
- Ability to prepare engineering plans using design software and drawing tools such as AutoCAD MicroStation and/or Civil 3D.
- Skill in the use of computer software such as Microsoft Office.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and technical materials.
Communication and Interpersonal
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary staffthe public various City of Milwaukee officials and other agencies.
- Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels inside and outside the organization and to work courteously cooperatively and effectively with people whose backgrounds may differ from ones own.
- Ability to coordinate with consultants contractors utility companies and governmental agencies to facilitate successful project delivery.
- Ability to prepare clear concise and accurate engineering correspondence reports and technical recommendations.
- Ability to present technical information clearly to engineers contractors City officials and members of the public.
- Written communication skills including the ability to prepare reports.

The current salary range (Pay Range 2KN) is$79209-$101665annuallyand the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis$82378-$105731 annually.Appointment above the minimum ispossible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subjectto approval.
In accordance with the City of Milwaukee Salary Ordinancean employee with a Professional Engineer License will be paid an additional 3%.
