Chief of Science and Resource Management
Job Summary
You will serve as a Chief of Science and Resource Management with National Park Service at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Rainbow Bridge National Monument.
First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:
- Serves as the senior principal advisor in the management of natural and cultural resources and is responsible for program development implementation and oversight.
- Carries out program management duties by developing work plans and schedules scopes of work cost estimates and proposals and/or grants to justify funding request and accomplish goals.
- Provide accurate and reliable advice and guidance to park leadership on all matters relating to resource management and tribal relations.
- Develops and maintains effective working relations with Native Americans other traditional associations and related groups agencies and the public; represents the superintendent when working with others on resource stewardship.
- Provide technical and substantive direct supervision to a highly specialized staff.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

Probationary Period: As a condition of employment for accepting this position you may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period to evaluate your fitness and whether your continuation of employment advances the public interest.
This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest meet the organization goals and mission of the agency and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the determining if your employment advances the public interest the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
Under applicable law the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies in writing that the individuals employment should continue and that their appointment should be the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period such appointments are terminated. Upon completion of your probationary period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification in writing that your continued employment advances the public interest.
This is a supervisory position that may require completion of a supervisory probationary period.

Minimum Qualification Requirements: To qualify for this position you must possess the Basic Requirements for at least one of the series below AND the Specialized Experience Requirements (minimum qualifications) for the GS-13 grade level.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR GENERAL ANTROPOLOGY GS-0190 SERIES:
In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position you must meet at least one of the following to qualify for this series:
- Degree: bachelors or higher degree in appropriate field of anthropology. You must provide transcripts. -OR-
- Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major or a combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in an appropriate field of anthropology or related course work plus appropriate experience or additional education for a total of 4 years. The combined education and experience must be comparable in type scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described above. You must provide transcripts. -OR-
- Experience: 4 years of experience in anthropology performing research museum work or similar professional-level work.
In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position you must meet at least one of the following to qualify for this series:
- Degree: bachelors or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology archeological cultures or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include but are not limited to typology classification sampling cultural evolution diffusion dating and analytical techniques; Archeological field school to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation field preservation techniques and report preparation by participation in actual field work AND Six semester hours of related course work in: geography geology or cultural geography; history historiography or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND Archeological field school.-OR- Related Curriculum: degree in Anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology physical anthropology or scientific linguistics) history American studies or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated above (including archeological field school). You MUST provide transcripts. -OR-
- Combination: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described above plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. This combination must demonstrate that an applicant possess the knowledge skills and abilities required to perform the work of an archaeologist comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study. You MUST provide transcripts. -OR-
- Experience: 4 years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey excavation laboratory analysis and preparation of written materials. You should be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position you must meet at least one of the following to qualify for this series:
- Degree: bachelors or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences agriculture natural resource management chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position. You MUST provide transcripts.
- Combination: a combination of education and experience that included courses equivalent to a major as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences agriculture natural resource management chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position) plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in 1 above. You must include hours worked per week on resume if combining education and experience and you must include transcripts within your application.
In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position you must meet the following to qualify for this series:
- Degree: bachelors or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. You MUST provide transcripts.
In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position you must meet at least one of the following to qualify for this series:
- Degree: bachelors or higher degree in botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany. You MUST provide transcripts.
- Combination: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany as shown in A above plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must include hours worked per week on your resume and you must provide transcripts within your application.
- AND-
FOR ALL SERIES: In addition to the Basic Requirements as stated above you must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE (MINIMUM QUALIFICATION) REQUIREMENTS:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience MUST include: 1) conducting resource management activities such as: planning scheduling and/or assigning work to subordinate staff providing technical and policy direction according to agency resource management policies budget management and supervision; 2) working with other agencies and organizations to develop project statements and/or memorandums of agreement or understanding; and 3) seeking grants and other fund sources. You must include hours per week worked.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community student social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands/Work Environment: Physical demands range from sedentary work in the office environment to occasional assignments that require field visits by vehicle vessel aircraft and walking over rough terrain in high desert environments. At times assignments must be performed under stressful conditions involving short or legal deadlines for projects. Working long days or traveling to attend meetings is common. Work is performed in the field and office. Fieldwork may take place in dangerous territory and involve access by foot over inhospitable desert terrain. Winter temperatures below zero and summer temperatures over 100 F may be encountered. Some projects require exposure to potentially dangerous conditions such as helicopter operations surveys in light airplanes boat-trips on lakes and rivers. Stormy weather can often be encountered during field work in norther Arizona and southern Utah.
The duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
