About the Employer

Established in 1870 Ocean View School District is one of the oldest in Ventura County. It began with a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of Olds and Hueneme Roads on property purchased from county pioneer Thomas Bard for $20. Students who wanted to continue their education beyond the eighth grade rode their horses about 45 minutes to Oxnard High 1952 what is now Mar Vista Elementary School was built to accommodate a growing post-World War II population and a housing expansion at Point Mugu Navy Base. The original one-room school was finally closed in 1959. Laguna Vista Elementary School was soon built to accommodate the continued growth in enrollment from the naval base. Later the District added two more schools and a child care center. Ocean View School District is located just north of the beautiful Santa Monica/Malibu area and extends north-ward to the outskirts of the city of Oxnard. The district covers an area of 80 square miles which includes the Point Mugu Naval Air Station as well as 15 miles of lovely Pacific shore line.

GENERAL SUMMARYUnder the general supervision of the Supervisor of Transportation operate a school bus over designated routes practicing non-aggressive defensive driving techniques in accordance with regulations and laws relating to pupil transportation in California following specified time schedules and perform other duties directly related to this job AND RESPONSIBILITIESKnowledge of the provisions of applicable state and federal laws California Motor Vehicle Code the Education Code and District policies applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting school children; safe driving a Type I and Type II school bus and other district vehicles with proficiency. With appropriate training may be required to operate a mechanized wheelchair a daily bus safety inspection prior to initial use of the vehicle to ensure that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition at all times. Completes inspection report noting deficiencies and notifies the appropriate a two-way radio knowledge of radio codes and proper students staff and chaperones on study and athletic trips to various locations making arrival and departure times as emergencies choosing the best route while transporting students staff parents and/or loading and unloading of students. Shall assist if required in the loading and unloading of physically handicapped students. Enforce District policy and procedures in maintaining discipline on buses. Provide bus evacuation and safety instruction to students and staff. Provide emergency first aid as and assists in the loading and unloading of equipment and cleanliness of windows and interior of bus sweep and mop bus floor as needed washes bus exterior and fuels bus as necessary. Checks fluid level in engine compartment and adds necessary designated bus routes bus stops and district traffic reports of mileage passengers carried and hours discipline reports to site deliver intradistrict SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREDAbility to see and read with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation. Ability to convey detailed spoken instructions accurately loudly or to enter and exit emergency with students of multiple ethnicities cultural values behavioral and physical to follow oral and written to interpret rules regulations laws and policies governing the to maintain order among children on a school to read in working with the public and school demeanor that establishes a desirable example for CONDITIONSMust have the physical skills/abilities/faculties to allow the full operation of any type and size of school bus that may be operated for the transportation of pupils on scheduled routes and study to moderate physical effort for extended periods of time; frequent sitting or standing; periodic lifting in excess of 50 to high stress school bus and school CONDITIONSWork environment indoors and - usually normal climate occasional adverse weather and exposure - occasional: gasoline oil solvents contact with students and District contacts with parents community members and outside agency CERTIFICATES/LICENSESHigh school diploma or equivalent.A valid Class A or Class B California drivers license with a P and S endorsements. A valid California school bus drivers certificate and a valid medical certificate.A valid First Aid will participate in the Districts random alcohol and controlled substance testing program per Federal STANDARDS Dexterity and physical condition to maintain a rigorous work schedule and meet standards of physical and mental health.
