Building Maintenance Plumber

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Building Maintenance Plumber at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

POSITION PURPOSE

Construct and maintain pipes and equipment used to providewater drainage and sewage services to University facilities utilizing avariety of techniques and equipment common to this trade.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Repair or replace damaged leaking or broken water gassewage or drain pipes plumbing fixtures and valves. Determine and obtain allsupplies and equipment needed to make repairs; erect and use ladders scaffoldsand chainfalls; work above ceilings on roof tops in crawl spaces pipe chasesor manholes behind walls at any heights from below ground level to severalstories high and at any angle with heavy pipes and tools; ensure water supplyis shut off in work area as appropriate; remove piping and fixtures and sizenew to fit securely and without leakage; cut threads and pipe on location or inshop as conditions permit. Repair and replace pumps plumbing fixtures valvescouplings and related equipment as necessary.

Install pipe lines valves and fixtures to carry watersewage and/or gases. Determine water source to be tapped into; plan pipingconnections and location of drains and/or fixtures based on needspecifications and space availability; weld braze and/or solder piping;maneuver pipes equipment and tools to access work area; run pipes aboveceiling below floors behind walls in pipe chases etc. to connect fixturesto gas or water supply or drainage and sewage systems. Install and replace soilpipe as necessary. Install lavatories plumbing fixtures water closetsurinals and valves as necessary.

Work according to blueprints sketches and/or personalinstructions. Determine where pipes and water supply are located; check wateror gas pressure and flow; adjust valves and regulators as necessary to controlflow; utilize appropriate methods procedures and equipment for worksite andsubstance to flow through pipes; work with and on cast iron plastic copperglass black steel and galvanized pipes and fixtures as dictated by currentpiping and/or system requirements; locate mislabeled or unidentified pipes.
Maintain all physical plant water sewer and drain on-site inspection and needs assessment; check and test installationsand repairs; access pipes and equipment via ladders locked doorways orpassages man holes exterior fire escapes using appropriate safety equipmentand procedures etc.; transport and use tools such as wrenches sledge hammerssaws thread cutters welding equipments and tanks etc. Unplug blocked drainlines and plumbing fixtures.

Maintain safe working conditions at all times by usingsupplies and equipment properly and taking necessary precautions. Performduties in areas which may contain toxic fumes or agents; complete tasksrequiring work in different positions and at different angles; transport toolsand equipment to worksites throughout campus including stairwells ceilingsbasements rooftops pipe chases crawl spaces etc.

All Plumbers are considered to be EssentialPersonnel and are required to report during a university emergencyclosure period.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession and maintenance of an authorized journeymanslicense as a plumber.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
Ability to transport use and maintain heavy tools and thefull range of plumbing supplies and equipment including different kinds ofpiping wrenches sledge hammers soldering irons welding torches threadcutters chainfalls ladders scaffold etc.
Ability to access pipes pumps and plumbing equipmentlocated at varying heights from below ground level to several stories high andin confined areas.
Ability to work in a variety of positions and at any angle.
Possession and maintenance of a valid Michigan vehicleoperators license and satisfactory driving record as determined by Universitypolicy.
Ability to work in hazardous working conditions utilizingappropriate safety precautions.
Some experience as a maintenance plumber.
Must obtain security clearance.
