Job Summary

Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) Water Line of Business (WLOB) has an opening for an Associate Civil Engineer to serve as the Associate Operations Engineer in the Utility Operations & Maintenance Division (UOM).

As the Associate Operations Engineer you will work closely with the Operations Engineer leveraging your knowledge of civil engineering and project planning and design in Capital Improvement Project (CIP) workgroups representing the UOM division as well asWLOB. Assist with planning and coordination in support of CIP and UOM in-house utility work. Develop cost estimates for planned and emergency repair work. Monitor work of contractors to ensure work is completed per design and in compliance with contract provisions and scope.

Central to this work is communication and collaboration with UOM staff on operations & maintenance (O&M) project work and emergency response as well coordination with various SPU divisions such as Construction Management Engineering Transmission and Distribution and Logistics. This position is part of the Utility Operations group and will report to the Utility Operations Manager.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist Operations Engineer in all aspects of UOM planned work and emergency response CIP and field O&M support.
  • Facilitate O&M planning/construction meetings.
  • Participate in CIP and field construction meetings.
  • Assist in the review of CIP and in-house O&M project plans shop drawings & specifications and construction estimates and recommend edits or approval to Operations Engineer and UOM managers.
  • Meet with representatives of UOM and other city departments contractors and consultants to discuss current or proposed projects.
  • Assist UOM and Transmission & Distribution staff in the field when necessary.
  • Support the Operations Engineer in responding to system emergencies in the field.
  • Work closely with Operations Engineer UOM and Transmission & Distribution staff in support of CIP planned O&M work and emergency response.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • Three (3) years of professional civil engineering experience.

AND

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology
  • Other combinations of education and/or experience which provide preparation to do professional civil engineering work.

License Certification and Other Requirements:

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather traffic hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand walk or bend for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to work nights evenings weekends and/or holidays.
Additional Information

Desired Candidate Profile:

  • Current EIT Certification or plan to obtain.
  • Recent experience in the design of water and/or wastewater conveyance & pumping systems
  • Recent experience with CIP projects water and/or wastewater.
  • Experience with plan review and cost estimating.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Field experience coordinating with maintenance and field staff.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Willing to learn on the job.

Workplace Environment:Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment. Hybridtelework/office/field assignment will be available and as circumstances dictate.

The full salary range for this position is $62.32 - $72.73 per hour.
