Job Title:Assistant Prosecuting Attorney (4915-31)
Division: Appellate
Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Starting Salary: $84388.00Annually: Additional compensation may be considered based on experience.

Job Overview:Assistant prosecuting attorneys assigned to the appellate divisionare responsible forrepresentingthe State of Ohio in criminal mattersprimarily in the First District Court of Appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court and also in the Hamilton County trial courts. They also assist the trial divisions with research projects and when needed matters being handledinthe prosecutors assigned to the appellate division have strong foundations in legal research writing and presenting oral arguments.
Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Researching writingbriefs and motions related to and arguing criminal appeals in the First District Court of Appeals. This includes appeals filed by criminal defendantsandappeals taken by the State of also involves occasionally serving as amicuscuriae in cases being handled by otherjurisdictions.
  • Researching writingbriefs and motions related to and arguing criminal appeals in the Ohio Supreme Court. This includesjurisdictionalmemorandums and whenjurisdictionis accepted merit briefs. This includes both appeals filed by criminal defendantsandappeals taken by the State of also involves occasionally serving as amicus curiae in cases being handled by otherjurisdictions.
  • Responding to research requests from the criminal trial divisionsand when needed assisting the trial divisions in the trial courtswithvariousmattersincluding but not limited toresponses to motions to suppress drafting pleadings preparing jury instructionsandansweringquestionsrelated to evidentiary may include making arguments in the trial courts.
  • Researching and responding to various post-conviction mattersincluding but not limited topetitions for post-conviction relief requests to seal/expunge records motions to vacate pleas/sentencesjudicial release jailtime creditcompetency/not guilty by reason of insanityapplications for DNA testingand parole involves handling hearings at the trial level.
  • Keepingup to dateon new developments in the law including keeping abreast of decisions from courts that impact Hamilton County and new legislation from the Ohio General Assembly.
  • Assistingother assistant prosecuting attorneys by reviewing and proofreadingpleadingsandparticipating in moot court sessions.
  • Maintaining files and records of assigned matters.
  • Working professionally withthe courts court staffdefense attorneys law enforcement agencies and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Ability to comfortably appear and argue matters before Ohio courts.
  • Critical thinking and decision making skills.
  • Fairness strong work ethic and high integrity.
  • A dedication to serving our community and seeking justice with integrity.
  • Ability to use LexisNexis for legal research.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office primarily Word and Outlook.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail oriented flexible and quick thinking and ability to quickly learn new tasks.
  • Good time management with an ability to prioritize job duties to ensure accurate and timely completion of responsibilities.
  • Ability to conduct business in accordance within State and Federal statutes and guidelines.
  • Ability to perform all other duties assigned delegated or required of the Assistant Prosecuting attorney as well as those prescribed by law.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license and the ability to drive to matters taking place outside of downtown Cincinnati such as Columbus Ohio.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience practicing criminal law at the appellate level.
  • Ability to conduct thorough and reliable research.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex information effectively.
  • Ability to produce clearconcise and well-organized written work.
  • Ability to develop strong persuasiveevidence-basedarguments.
  • Licensure in the federal courts while helpful is not required.
