The Library and Information Science (LIS) Program School of Communication and Information(SCI) College of Social Sciences University of Hawaii at Manoa (Honolulu Hawaii) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (F-3) to join our American Library Association-accredited program. This is a 9-month full-time permanent tenure-track faculty appointment to begin August 1 2027 subject to position clearance and availability of funds. We are seeking a candidate with expertise in Culturally Responsive Data Science and areas such as data analytics data management machine learning information visualization and the ethical use of data in libraries archives and information organizations. We are also seeking a candidate with a commitment to teaching and advising students with varying backgrounds. We work toward becoming a Native Hawaiian place of learning by focusing on: relationships working collaboratively to conduct research designing learning experiences and engaging with and supporting Indigenous and local information practices. More information about the School of Communication & Information and Library and Information Science is available athttps:// A successful candidate will participate in and contribute to the College of Social Sciences new SODA (Social Data Analytics) data sciences initiative developing and teaching one graduate and one advanced undergraduate course both of which will be open to LIS students and students across the College.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Support the Library and Information Science (LIS) Program School of Communication and Information (SCI) and the Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Communication and
Information Sciences through research teaching and service.
2. Teach graduate-level core and elective courses supporting multiple areas across the LIS curriculum and graduate and advanced undergraduate courses on data science
developed as part of the Colleges new SODA (Social Data Analytics) initiative each year using face-to-face online and hybrid modes.
3. Maintain a rigorous research agenda.
4. Serve as academic advisor and mentor to students.
5. Participate actively in professional and student organizations.
6. Supervise independent study thesis and professional development activities.
7. Actively participate in cross-unit activities within the SCI.
8. Actively collaborate and coordinate with UH Libraries digital collections and initiatives in teaching research and service.
9. Participate in LIS Program planning administration and assessment and serve on program School College and University committees
10. Work effectively with varying constituencies.
11. Perform other related duties as assigned by the LIS Program Director and SCI Chair.


Minimum Qualifications:
1. PhD in Library and Information Science or a related field. ABDs will be considered but all degree requirements must be completed and PhD conferred prior to date of hire.
2. Demonstrated ability to effectively teach courses supporting both the LIS and SODA curricula;
3. Ability to mentor and advise students;
4. Demonstrated ability to conduct and/or publish research with data analytics data management machine learning or related computational methods with attention to
ethical and responsible data use;
5. Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications:
1. American Library Association-accredited Masters degree in Library and Information Science or related field or equivalent.
2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively across disciplines communities and/or groups with varying backgrounds.
3. College or University teaching or professional training experience.
4. Demonstrated success or strong potential in securing external research funding.
5. Research and/or professional experience in culturally responsive data science Indigenous data sovereignty Indigenous or regional (e.g. Asia/Pacific) knowledge systems content management systems information visualization and/or related information technologies.
