Position Summary: The Assistant Headmaster manages academic instructional and disciplinary matters at the school as requested by the Headmaster and acts as an essential liaison for families students faculty and staff regarding student academic performance. He or she is an experienced liberal arts instructor and leader with an extensive knowledge of providing a Great Books core curriculum to children and/or teenagers. He/she reports directly to the headmaster and coordinates with relevant Great Hearts Lead Office staff regarding academic and instructional matters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acts as an essential liaison for families students faculty and staff regarding students.
  • Coordinates with relevant Great Hearts Lead Office Staff regarding academic and instructional matters as needed.
  • Work with (generally) individual student or parent issues that get elevated and require executive attention at the school.
  • Applies the standard policies and administrative regulations of a Great Hearts Academy and those established by the local Board of Directors and Headmaster in accordance with all federal state and local regulations.
  • Oversee staff duty assignments.
  • Participate in the long and short range planning for the school.
  • Oversee schools Crisis Management Plans and practices.
  • With Headmaster assists in recruiting interviewing and recommending to the Great Hearts and the local board faculty and staff for employment.
  • Observe and evaluate teachers as assigned by the Headmaster.
  • Plan and run or oversee/support key school events and make decisions necessary to support them. (i.e. new faculty orientation first week of school picnic field trips graduation summer school etc.).
  • Develop and coordinate key schedules and processes.
  • Participate in periodic Great Hearts professional development activities with other Heads of School and the faculty of other academies at the discretion of the Headmaster.
  • Works with Headmaster to schedule attend and lead faculty meetings and Open House and other community meetings.
  • Works with the Headmaster to lead the local Community Investment and annual Tax Credit Drive programs.
  • Participates with the Headmaster in an annual evaluation of his/her performance and accomplishments.
  • May need to teach or substitute when necessary.
  • Manage and maintain the schedules appointments and travel arrangements for the HM or lead staff as requested.
  • Works with Headmaster to provide for the safe and orderly environment of the school by establishing and maintaining standards of conduct.
  • Reads knows and supports the philosophy policies procedures and other pertinent data of the school as published in the Faculty Handbook and most current Family Handbook.
  • Follow school policies and procedures including the Academy Crisis Plan for ensuring the safety and security of students on campus.

Required/Preferred Education: Bachelors degree at minimum.

Required/Preferred Experience: Experience as a liberal arts instructor and knowledge of providing a Great Books core curriculum.

Physical Functions: Requires but is not limited to standing sitting repetitious hand and body movements bending squatting and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to 15 pounds approximately.

US Work Authorization is required.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal history background check and fingerprint clearance in accordance with state requirements.

Travel required: May need to travel locally for training and professional development opportunities.
