Johns Hopkins Health System is seeking an experienced Assistant Director of Public Safety to help lead security and safety operations within one of the nations premier healthcare systems. This leadership position partners with the Director of Public Safety to oversee daily operations develop high-performing teams ensure regulatory compliance and maintain a safe and secure environment for patients visitors physicians and staff.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Public Safety is responsible for supporting the strategic and operational leadership of the Public Safety Department. This role oversees security operations supervises personnel develops emergency preparedness initiatives ensures compliance with healthcare safety regulations and works collaboratively with hospital leadership to promote a culture of safety throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and oversight for daily public safety and security operations.
  • Supervise mentor and develop Public Safety staff including hiring scheduling coaching and performance management.
  • Monitor and maintain security technologies including surveillance cameras access control systems alarms and weapons detection systems.
  • Develop implement and evaluate security policies procedures and emergency response protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA HIPAA and all applicable federal state and local safety regulations.
  • Lead emergency preparedness planning drills and incident response efforts.
  • Conduct safety audits risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate responses to security incidents workplace violence events natural disasters and other emergencies.
  • Collaborate with clinical leadership Facilities Human Resources and external law enforcement and emergency agencies.
  • Prepare reports maintain compliance documentation and communicate operational updates to senior leadership.
  • Promote a culture of safety through staff education training and continuous improvement initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice Public Safety Healthcare Administration or a related field required.
  • Masters degree preferred.
Experience
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in public safety security or emergency management preferably in a healthcare environment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong leadership coaching and team-building abilities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of healthcare safety and security regulations.
  • Excellent communication conflict resolution and decision-making skills.
  • Experience managing emergency situations in high-pressure environments.
  • Working knowledge of modern security technologies and emergency response systems.
Required Licensure & Certifications
  • Valid drivers license with no more than 5 current points.
  • Ability to successfully complete post-hire training including:
    • CPR
    • Stop the Bleed
    • Narcan
    • De-escalation Training
  • Maryland applicants:
    • Maryland Security Guard License (or apply within 2 weeks of hire and obtain within 90 days).
  • Sibley Memorial Hospital applicants:
    • DC Security Officer License (or apply within 2 weeks of hire and obtain within 45 days).
  • All Childrens Hospital applicants:
    • Florida Class D Security License (obtain within 180 days if not currently licensed).
  • IAHSS Supervisor Certification required within 12 months of hire.
Additional Requirements

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.

Exceptions may be considered for candidates under 21 with qualifying:

  • Military experience
  • Law enforcement experience
  • Comparable healthcare security experience
Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Respond quickly during emergency situations.
  • Climb stairs bend stoop squat and reach as necessary.
  • Safely restrain aggressive individuals as part of a response team.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
Schedule

This leadership role requires flexibility to work:

  • Rotating shifts
  • Weekends
  • Holidays
  • Overtime as needed to support staffing requirements and emergency operations

Salary Range: Minimum 45.65/hour - Maximum 79.91/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
