JOB SUMMARY:

The extended day program American Sign Language interpreter facilitates communication between hearing and deaf consumers in a variety of after school settings. The interpreter is also available to address communication accessibility and deaf cultural issues as they arise.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interpret in a variety of extended day situations and service areas. Situations will include: interpreting on playground between students teachers and student peers tutoring/assisting student during homework time.
  • Have the skill to match a variety of language and cognitive needs.
  • Facilitate visual accessibility.
  • Orient staff and students on the interpreters function primary responsibilities and diverse roles.
  • Serve as a cultural mediator between deaf and hearing communities.
  • Work collaboratively with co-workers in multiple environments.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Be aware of physical requirements necessary in various settings.

Reports to: SUN Site Manager Bridgitte Lynch



Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely meet the following requirements:

  • ASL and English Fluency
  • Achieve a passing score of 3.5 or above on the EIPA Performance Test or hold RID NIC CI or CT Certification

PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors or Associates Degree from an Interpreter Education Program

THIS JOB ALSO REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Repetitive motion prolonged sitting and extensive visual involvement

  • Ability to efficiently travel in order to perform duties and other agency related errands

  • Moderate lifting
