General Summary
The Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic II repairs fabricates modifies and installs sheet metal parts items and assemblies. Sheet metal mechanic work requires knowledge of the physical properties and working characteristics of sheet metal knowledge of tools and equipment required in the sheet metal trade and knowledge of shop mathematics and principles.
Essential Job Functions
Plans work sequence repair methods equipment needs and material requirements from engineering drawings applicable specifications airframe service changes bulletins contractors and vendor drawings and repair manuals and examines and evaluates damage wear corrosion misalignments and other deficiencies.
Performs major structural repairs and modifications involving critical structural members and skins.
Experienced in removal replacement or repairs of all or portions of skins ribs spars bulkheads fittings forgings brackets clips support splice members etc. by fitting aligning drilling and riveting.
Highly proficient in laying out and fabricating parts such as splices reinforcements inspection plates doublers surface or flush patches clips angles brackets etc. and frequently manufactures complex ribs bulkheads stringers skins repair parts etc. when none are available.
Highly proficient in the removal and replacement of damaged or corroded fittings rivets screws bolts and other types of fasteners.
Highly proficient in the ability to fabricate from technical drawings and documentation to tolerances of 10 thousandths of an inch.
Drills and reams holes for bushings stress relieves scratches by burnishing or buffing.
Routinely displays expert skills in the manufacture and use of fixtures when required to determine proper alignments of major aircraft hard points proper dihedral and incidence angles and other close tolerance alignment situations.
Uses NDI checks to assist in locating structural failure.
Available for short-term travel to complete work off-site.
Must be capable of safely handling government-furnished equipment and materials.
Must be available to work a standard weekly schedule with overtime as required.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Requires thorough comprehension in reading interpreting engineering drawings repair manuals and related technical data and thorough knowledge of and skill in the use of tools and techniques of rework and repair of sheet metal fabricated structures.
Requires a thorough knowledge of shop mathematics ability to lay out form shape and/or fit and assemble multi-contoured parts using such precision instruments as micrometers calipers dividers dial indicators levels protractors clinometers gages and rulers and such metal working tools as hand and powered sheers brakes rolls mallets forming blocks hand saws grinders sanders files a wide variety of pneumatic drills rivet guns and blind fastener tools.
Requires a thorough knowledge of various machinery to include band saws hydraulic and manual press brakes hydraulic and manual shears shrink/stretch press turret punch etc.
Requires a thorough knowledge of various hand tools to include pneumatic rivet guns pneumatic/electric drills hand shears countersinks calipers micrometers Clecos clamps cherry max guns hi-lock tools drills scales etc.
Requires expert comprehension in reading interpreting engineering drawings repair

Requires a thorough knowledge of aircraft structural hardware (including applications and techniques of preparation and installation) such as solid tubular and explosive rivets standard and special aircraft bolts nuts and washers anchor nuts Hi-Loks Dzus fasteners screws airlock and fasteners and a variety of other structural fasteners.
Requires expert knowledge of and the ability to detect various types of corrosion such as surface corrosion galvanic or dissimilar metal corrosion pitting corrosion and fretting corrosion.
Requires an expert knowledge of corrosion treatment repair methods and proper tools used in corrosion removal.
Requires expert knowledge and probable effects of various loads and stresses applied to structures such as compression tensile and shear and the ability to recognize an overloaded or overstressed condition.
The aircraft sheet metal mechanic must rely on advanced trade knowledge and the ability to improvise trade techniques.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Must be able to obtain a security clearance when required by the contract.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent.
Five (5) years of experience with an aircraft sheet metal mechanic background in commercial or military aircraft manufacturing/repair/installation required.
