The primary purpose of this position AIRCRAFT MECHANIC LEADER WLis to lead three or more workers to accomplish trades and/or labor work on a substantially full time and continuing basis. Leader is responsible to both perform the work assigned by a supervisor and ensure that subordinates complete assigned work consistent with trades and labor standards.
- Lead a team of trades and/or labor workers.
- Perform nonsupervisory trades and/or labor work that is usually of the same kind and level as members of the work crew led.
- Inspect the work performed by various specialists ensuring conformance with applicable operational specifications and correction of discrepancies or problems.
- Coordinate and/or perform ground functional test (engine run-up) and troubleshooting work.

In order to qualify you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800 Aircraft Overhaul Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is Ability to Lead or Supervise.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge skills abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
- Knowledge of Equipment Assembly Installation Repair etc.
- Technical Practices (theoretical precise artistic)
- Use of Measuring Instruments
- Ability to Interpret Instructions Specification etc. (includes blueprint reading)
- Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
- Trouble Shooting
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Must stand stoop bend reach climb and crawl. Frequently handles items weighting up to 20 pounds without assistance and occasionally lifts and caries items weighting up to 50 pounds with human or mechanical assistance such as hoists hand trucks or lifts.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Outside and inside (other than normal commuting). Excessive cold. Excessive noise intermittent. Solvents (degreasing agents). Grease and oils. Electrical energy. Slippery or uneven walking surface. Working around machinery with moving parts. Working around moving objects or vehicles. Working on ladders or scaffolding. Working closely with others. Additional environmental factors include wearing of protective equipment (liquid oxygen servicing apron gloves and face shield) and shift work.
This job does not have an education qualification requirement.
Hill Air Force Base provides worldwide engineering and logistics management for the F-16 Fighting Falcon A-10 Thunderbolt II and the Minuteman III ICBM and performs depot maintenance of the F-16 A-10 and C-130 Hercules aircraft. The base is located between Ogden and Salt Lake City. The area is known for year-round activities including skiing hiking boating extreme sports fishing and hunting with four distinct seasons low humidity and moderate snow fall in the valley.
