Job Summary
This position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Planned Maintenance & Projects Section at the VA Medical Center in Salem VA 24153. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is responsible for installing troubleshooting performing preventative maintenance and repairing all HVAC&R (heating ventilating air conditioning and refrigeration) equipment and controls.

Your duties can include but are not limited to the following:
- Repairing troubleshooting maintaining and installing air conditioning equipment in the hospital and ancillary buildings;
- Installing troubleshooting repairing and maintaining refrigerators freezers and ice machines including those utilized for patient food and drugs laboratory specimens and blood products;
- Operating and repairing all aspects of the environmental control system to include adding and removing points in the system building graphics modifying and troubleshooting programing repairing and replacing sensors actuators and other control devices and repairing and replacing LAN devices such as terminal equipment controllers; and
- Troubleshooting diagnosing and making repairs to a large variety of equipment and systems that provide a variety of air-conditioning functions such as heating cooling humidification dehumidification and air cleaning filtering and circulating.
- Participating as part of a multidisciplinary team performing a full range of facilities projects.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent daily duties consist of climbing working in cramped positions and restricted spaces and moving and lifting heavy objects and equipment in the repairing and installation of A/C and refrigeration systems.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge skills and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
