Description

Under the general supervision of the Educational Talent Search Director or assigned administrator provides advising outreach student support and program assistance services to participants in the Educational Talent Search (ETS/TRIO) program and related student success initiatives. Assists participants with navigating educational pathways understanding postsecondary opportunities accessing academic and support resources and developing educational and career goals within established guidelines and procedures.

Supports equitable access to educational opportunities college readiness student engagement and educational attainment through culturally responsive communication outreach coordination and student support practices. Serves as a liaison between students families schools community organizations faculty staff and external agencies to support educational access and student success.

The position operates within established policies procedures grant requirements and program guidelines and does not exercise counseling faculty authority instructional responsibility independent program authority or formal supervisory authority over permanent staff.

Positions within the Advisor classification may be assigned to specialized program outreach athletic recruitment or grant-funded service areas. Assignment-specific duties may vary based on operational needs; however such assignments do not inherently alter the classification level or scope of the position.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification provides advising outreach student support and program assistance services within assigned ETS/TRIO and educational outreach program areas. Responsibilities include assisting participants with understanding educational opportunities accessing academic support resources participating in college readiness activities and navigating postsecondary planning processes designed to support educational access and achievement.

This classification is distinguished from clerical support classifications by its responsibility for ongoing student and participant support outreach coordination and advising-related activities requiring independent interaction with students families schools and program participants.

This classification is distinguished from counseling faculty positions in that the position provides guidance information referrals and student support within established procedures and does not provide academic counseling personal counseling educational planning authority or instructional services reserved for faculty positions.

This classification is distinguished from management classifications by the absence of institutional policy-making authority independent program administration budget authority or formal supervision of permanent staff.

Essential Duties

The following duties are representative of those performed by employees in this classification. Employees may perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Provide advising support guidance and information regarding educational opportunities college readiness financial aid admissions processes academic preparation career exploration and available support services within established guidelines
  • Assist participants with navigating postsecondary preparation admissions financial aid enrollment and related educational support processes
  • Support equitable access to programs services and resources for students and participants from diverse academic socioeconomic cultural disability gender identity sexual orientation ethnic and educational backgrounds
  • Provide culturally responsive communication and student support practices that promote student engagement educational access college readiness persistence and educational success
  • Assist participants in identifying educational career financial aid transfer and support service resources appropriate to individual needs and goals
  • Refer participants to appropriate schools colleges counselors faculty support programs community resources and external agencies as needed
  • Coordinate and support workshops orientations campus visits presentations educational activities outreach events and student engagement activities
  • Assist in outreach and engagement efforts designed to increase participation and educational access for historically underserved and disproportionately impacted student populations
  • Support implementation of ETS/TRIO program activities and student support initiatives in accordance with applicable grant requirements and institutional procedures
  • Maintain regular communication and follow-up with participants families schools and community partners to support educational engagement and program participation
  • Monitor and track participant eligibility participation services academic progress information and related program activities in accordance with grant and reporting requirements
  • Maintain accurate electronic and physical records documentation case notes participation records and related program data
  • Compile track monitor and prepare reports related to assigned activities participation student services and operational requirements
  • Develop and maintain outreach advising workshop presentation and informational materials using print presentation website and digital communication platforms
  • Utilize student information systems databases spreadsheets communication systems and related technologies to support assigned activities and operational needs
  • Collaborate with faculty staff administrators schools families community organizations and external partners to support coordinated educational access and student success initiatives
  • Foster welcoming respectful inclusive and student-centered interactions with students families employees and community members
  • Maintain confidentiality of participant and student information in accordance with FERPA and applicable laws regulations District policies and grant requirements
  • Participate in meetings trainings professional development activities committees and shared governance activities as assigned

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university; and

  • One (1) year of experience in advising outreach education support TRIO programs student services youth development recruitment or related student-focused services;
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to travel locally and regionally as required by the assignment
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings weekends or off-site activities in support of assigned programs and student services

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
A combination of education and experience equivalent to:
  • Experience working in a community college K-12 or other educational environment
  • Experience working with TRIO college readiness outreach or educational access programs
  • Experience working with diverse student populations including first-generation low-income historically underserved disproportionately impacted or nontraditional student populations
  • Experience conducting outreach workshops presentations or educational engagement activities
  • Experience utilizing student information systems databases educational technologies website content tools or digital communication platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to support inclusive and equitable student engagement and educational success initiatives
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic cultural disability gender identity sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
