Summary

You will serve as a Administrative Support Assistant (Seasonal) with the BLM California State Office

This is a temporary position expected to last 1560 hours.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for BLM California State Office is October 2026 to July 2027 but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions project needs or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: October 2026


Duties

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

  • Enter and/or validate time and attendance records in the automated payroll system.
  • Prepare edit and finalize correspondence for office supervisors and managers.
  • Disseminate correspondence to appropriate personnel and track and maintain records of it.
  • Maintain the central filing system (official records directives BLM Manuals and Technical References Departmamental manuals and directives secretarial orders etc.).
  • Provide general information concerning office(s) operations to the public both orally and in writing. Contact may occur though telephone email and in person. Respond to inquiries directly or refer individualto the appropriate staff member.

    Qualifications

    All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/04/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

    To receive credit for experience your resume MUST state either full-time (or 40 hours a week) or part-time with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

    To Qualify for the GS-5:
    You must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level. Examples of specialized experience may include performing clerical administrative duties such as processing mail drafting correspondence performing records management; computer software knowledge or experience in data entry and customer service.
    -OR-
    EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university . You must include transcripts.
    -OR-
    Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. You must include transcripts

    To Qualify for the GS-6:
    You must possess at least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples specialized experience may include utilizing an automated time and attendance system for reporting; communicating with customers to answer questions and disseminate and explain information; coordinating procurement of materials supplies and services for a department; and researching collecting compiling data and statistical information for reports and presentations in support of staff members.

    To Qualify for the GS-7:
    You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06 level in the Federal Service (obtained either in the private or public sectors). Examples of specialized experience may include providing administrative and office support services to include budgeting purchasing data processing and file management; establishing and maintaining files in accordance with regulations; preparing and reviewing correspondence using software applications as electronic mail desktop publishing spreadsheets databases and presentations.

    Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community student social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.

    Education

    You must submit a copy of your transcript(s) to support claimed education if substituting education for experience. Transcripts must include your name school name grades credit hours earned major(s) grade point average or class ranking and date the degree was conferred if applicable. A typed list of courses grades semester/quarter hours GPA etc. will not be accepted. Non-submission may result in being rated not qualified for the position. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

    Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.     Salary information: Rest of US Salary Pay Table
    GS-5 step 1 $19.52 per hour to step 10 $25.37 per hour
    GS-6 step 1 21.76 per hour to step 10 $28.29 per hour
    GS-7 step 1 $24.18 per hour to step 10 $31.43 per hour
    First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.
