The Tulane University School of Architecture and Built Environment provides global leadership through excellence in design research and practice in the built environment. The School includes undergraduate and graduate Architecture programs and several other allied programs and degree paths. Faculty members teach coursework and collaborate as appropriate to their expertise across the Schools programs including Architecture ( BSA and ) Landscape Architecture and Engineering (MLA-MS RCSE) Real Estate Development (BSRE MSRED) Historic Preservation (Undergraduate Minor Graduate Certificate MSHP) Design (BADes) Sustainable Urbanism (BS SURB) Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship (Undergraduate Minor) and Climate Change: Science and Practice (Undergraduate Minor). Other schools programs and centers at the University provide ample opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

The School is recognized for robust initiatives in community-engaged design (The Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design) design-build (URBANbuild) interdisciplinary research studios and research initiatives supported by the Center on Climate Change and Urbanism. Over the past five years the School has experienced significant growth across all its programs and in spring 2025 the School returned to its newly renovated home Richardson Memorial Hall complete with new studios fabrication shops classrooms exhibition space and offices. Responsibilities:

The Adjunct Lecturer will teach courses in architectural conservation conservation science and conservation technology. Teaching responsibilities may include:
Introducing students to the composition properties and deterioration mechanisms of historic building materials including stone brick terra cotta earth mortars plasters concrete metals wood paints finishes and related materials.
Teaching basic conservation science principles as they apply to architectural materials including porosity permeability capillary action adhesion cleaning coatings and
repair materials.
Leading hands-on laboratory exercises field demonstrations and material analysis activities.
Teaching students to identify building materials and assess causes of deterioration through observation documentation testing and conditions assessment.
Guiding students in the preparation of conservation documentation including drawings elevations sections details conditions assessments and treatment recommendations.
Teaching students to develop and interpret preservation specifications project manuals and conservation treatment protocols.
Leading hands-on exercises that train students to understand and communicate appropriate means and methods for conservation work.
Teaching practical conservation treatments and related techniques which may include masonry wall construction repointing stucco and plaster preparation masonry repair stone
cleaning and treatment decorative plaster replication wood window surface preparation glazing and painting.
Introducing students to the role of mock-ups in construction conservation quality control and design communication.
Helping students understand the relationships among owners architects conservators contractors subcontractors and tradespeople in preservation projects.
Coordinating site visits demonstrations and field-based learning experiences as appropriate.
Evaluating student work through readings discussions lab assignments mock-ups quizzes exams documentation assignments and/or conservation specifications.

There are no service requirements associated with this adjunct appointment.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants should have:

• Professional experience in architectural conservation historic preservation building conservation materials conservation preservation trades architecture construction or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated knowledge of historic building materials and their deterioration repair and conservation.
• Ability to teach both conceptual and hands-on aspects of conservation practice.
• Experience with field documentation conditions assessment preservation specifications and/or construction communication.
• Ability to work safely and professionally with students in laboratory studio field and hands-on demonstration settings.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to teach students with varying levels of technical background.
  

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred candidates will have one or more of the following:

• Graduate degree or advanced professional training in historic preservation architectural conservation architecture materials conservation conservation science construction technology or a related field.
• Experience teaching at the college graduate workshop field school or professional training level.
• Experience with conservation laboratory methods material testing microscopy mortar analysis wood identification metals identification paint/finish analysis or related techniques.
• Experience preparing preservation specifications treatment plans conservation reports or project manuals.
• Demonstrated experience with traditional materials and methods including lime mortars plaster masonry stone repair stucco wood windows coatings and finishes.
• Familiarity with digital documentation 3D scanning or related documentation technologies.

Knowledge of Gulf South New Orleans Caribbean or subtropical building materials and conservation challenges.

CONTRACT AND COMPENSATION

• Duration: Positions are offered on a semester basis and can be recurring.
• Compensation: $$2500$3000 per credit depending on experience and qualifications. The instructor will teach 912 credits over the academic year.
• This appointment does not include benefits.
