About the Program Higher Ground Youth and Family Services provides after-school programming for elementary and secondary students in Anaheim California. Many of the students served come from under-resourced communities and benefit from individualized academic support that supplements their school-day learning. Through this partnership Chapman University students will be placed as tutors within the after-school program to provide homework help academic enrichment and mentoring. The program aims to improve academic outcomes for K-12 students while providing Chapman undergraduates with valuable pre-professional experience in education and youth development. Position Summary Provide small-group academic tutoring 2 to 3 students at a time in reading writing and math reinforcing school-day learningand building academic confidence and skill. This position supports community residents by helping maintain welcoming spacesand strengthen programs that respond to community needs. Through this work the role will help unsure that essential services and resources are accessible and contribute to residents quality of life.
Responsibilities
Lead small-group tutoring sessions (2 to 3 students) in reading writing and/or math matched to each students grade level and needs. Reinforce concepts and skills from students current schoolwork and assigned homework. Use grade-appropriate materials and a structured lesson plan for each subject area. Track individual student progress across sessions and flag ongoing academic concerns to program staff. Build a patient encouraging learning environment that supports academic confidence. Communicate consistently with the site supervisor on grouping and scheduling of students.
Required Qualifications
Currently enrolled Chapman University student receiving a Federal Work-Study award. Strong academic foundation in reading writing or math; education English or a STEM -related major is a plus. Comfortable explaining and re-teaching concepts to small groups of youth at varying skill levels. Patient encouraging and able to adapt instruction to each students pace. Must have reliable source of transportation. Program Hours Monday through Friday 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (after-school program hours). Scheduling is flexible within this window partial availability (for example 2 to 3 days per week) is welcome; students do not need to cover all five days.
