Job Summary

POSITION: Special Education Teacher

Supervisor: Secondary Principal

LOCATION: Secondary School

HOURS: 3.5 hours/day 180 days/year (0.5 FTE)

Representation: Kittitas Education Association

Position Description: The Special Education Teacher assesses students through standardized assessments and performance-based assessments which include interview observation and review of pertinent data; to determine the primary achievable needs of students based on assessment and written in the IEP; to develop programs that guide and stimulate students to achieve IEP goals/objectives considering coordination of services with home and community; to monitor progress on goals/objectives routinely; and to revise goals/objectives as needed.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Instructs eligible special education students in content areas as outlined in students IEPs; and consistent with program requirements and district curriculum goals.
  2. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials/activities providing individualized and small group instruction to meet varied student needs.
  3. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  4. Develops and implements as appropriate and in collaboration the special education team individualize student behavior plans
  5. Prepares for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  6. Evaluates and documents student performance growth on goals and content areas; keeps accurate and complete records as required by law district policy and administrative regulation; prepares progress reports.
  7. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individual students involved.
  8. Evaluates selects and requisitions books instructional aids and supplies conforming to policy.
  9. Maintains accurate inventory records.
  10. Communicates with parents general education colleagues and other professional staff and other professional staff members through conferences and other means to discuss individual student progress attitude health and learning challenges.
  11. Assumes responsibility for safe and proper use of materials equipment and facilities ensuring student safety.
  12. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for instructional assistant(s) and volunteer(s) cooperatively evaluating their job performance with the building principal.
  13. Creates an effective attractive and interesting learning environment appropriate for the grade levels served.
  14. Makes provisions for availability outside the regular school day for parents and students when requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  15. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities and other professional growth opportunities.
  16. Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator(s) to develop the method by which evaluation of this position will be conducted in conformity with district and State guidelines.
  17. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  18. Administers group and/or individualized academic or content-area standardized tests in accordance with district and State guidelines; documents results; analyzes and summarizes findings; and collaboratively discusses findings with special education teams including parents.

Other Job Functions:

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience

  1. Valid Washington State teaching certificate with endorsement in Special Education.
  2. Must qualify to work in the proximity of children under the conditions of a WSP/FBI background check.

  1. Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations codes and policies specific to students with disabilities.
  2. Knowledge of current general education and instructional support curriculum.
  3. Knowledge of stages of child development behavioral management and age appropriate activities.
  4. Knowledge of a range of disabilities their impact on education and student learning and strategies for instructional support.
  5. Ability to plan implement and evaluate effective instructional activities to meet student needs and district goals.
  6. Ability to design and implement life skills instruction for students with a broad spectrum of disabilities.
  7. Ability to develop and maintain effective classroom management.
  8. Ability to work collaboratively as part of an educational team.
  9. Ability to design and implement life skills instruction for students with a broad spectrum of disabilities.
  10. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with students parents staff and administrators.
  11. Ability and skills to learn and use the districts technology.

Physical Demands

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following conditions:

  • Significant: (i.e. sitting talking hearing walking vision color vision peripheral/depth perception ability to adjust focus grasping handling paperwork repetitive motion use of personal computer looking at a computer monitor lifting up to 10 pounds)
  • Frequent: (i.e. standing bending carrying; use of phone; use of copy machine)
  • Occasional: (i.e. driving lifting over 10 pounds up to 45 pounds reaching above the shoulder use of fax machine)
