Job Summary
Position Summary
The Mediator is responsible for working with the Lead Mediator to provide mediation services to students and staff district-wide. The Mediator is also responsible in assisting the Lead Mediator to reach out to students parents teachers and other school personnel and provide training in the techniques of conflict mediation.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
The responsibilities listed below reflect the primary duties of the position; the omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the role. Additional responsibilities that are similar related or a logical assignment to the position may be assigned as needed to meet program legal or operational needs.
- Assist in processing mediation requests/referrals; scheduling mediations coordinating and conducting mediation sessions monitoring agreements maintaining records and issuing reports on services
- Oversee and support peer mediators during mediation sessions
- Assist in creating and delivering presentations regarding mediation and conflict resolution
- In collaboration with the Lead Mediator provide individual and small group services relative to mediation
- In collaboration with the Lead Mediator conduct and share research studies which determine the nature of conflicts and analyze factors attitudes and morale
- Assist in the exploration of grant application
- Along with the Lead Mediator serve as a resource for Somerville Public Schools crisis situations and help coordinate professional mediator response as needed
- In collaboration with the Lead Mediator support K-12 mediation initiatives and oversee peer mediation programming at SPS
- In collaboration with the Lead Mediator coordinate with community agencies and others with related responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications Knowledge Abilities & Skills
- Mediation Certificate required. Must be a trained mediator
- Bachelors degree in Conflict resolution Counseling Social Work or related field preferred
- Specific coursework/training in conflict resolution and/or mediation
- Bilingual ability desirable
- Ability to function independently
- Attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple projects is essential
- Proven communication and effective interpersonal skills required
- Should demonstrate leadership qualities and effective consensus skills

- Position Reports to:TheDirector of Students Services and Lead Mediator
Terms of Employment
- Position Type:Full Time
- July-June -209 work days - Scheduled school year and additional day before & after the school year
- Location: SOMERVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
- Union Affiliation: Non Union
- FLSA Classification:Exempt
