About University of Maine System

University of Maine System is composed of seven public universities throughout Maine serving more than 34,000 students. It also operates 10 regional outreach centers as well as distance education programs. The University of Maine System offers nearly 600 majors, minors, and concentrations; its flagship campus in Orono (UMaine) offers nearly 90 bachelor's degree programs, more than 60 master's degree programs, and about two dozen doctoral programs. UMaine was established in 1862 as the Maine College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts; it adopted its current name in 1897. The University of Maine System was created in 1968 by the state legislature.
