In this hands-on role you will be the backbone of the DT department supporting teachers and inspiring students by preparing workshop materials maintaining specialized machinery and ensuring a safe creative learning environment.
Job Overview
Working under the direction of the Head of Design & Technology the DT Technician will take day-to-day responsibility for preparing practical lesson materials maintaining hand and power tools overseeing workshop safety compliance and supporting students during practical construction and design projects across wood metal and plastics.
Key Responsibilities
Workshop Preparation: Prepare timber metals plastics and card materials accurately using saws guillotines and laser cutters ahead of practical lessons.
Tool & Equipment Maintenance: Routinely service clean and maintain workshop machinery (e.g. bandsaws lathes pillar drills sanders) and hand tools to high safety standards.
Health & Safety Compliance: Conduct daily safety checks manage COSHH logs for chemicals and adhesives and ensure PPE and dust extraction systems operate correctly.
Resource & Stock Management: Monitor and order raw materials hardware electronics components and consumables keeping the stock room organized and cost-efficient.
Classroom & Practical Support: Assist teachers during lessons by supporting students with technical guidance safe machine operation and project assembly.
Exhibition & Showcase Prep: Help mount display and photograph student coursework and GCSE/A-Level portfolios for moderation and open evenings.

Candidate Requirements
Practical Background: Proven experience working in a workshop environment manufacturing engineering or as a school D&T technician.
Technical & Machine Skills: Confident handling workshop machinery power tools and CAM equipment (such as laser cutters or 3D printers).
Safety Awareness: A solid working understanding of workshop health and safety protocols risk assessments and COSHH regulations.
Character & Approach: Creative highly organized safety-first mindset and patient when assisting students of varying skill levels.
