We are recruiting a Trainee Claims Handler in Bolton for an established FCA-regulated insurance business. You do not need to have worked in insurance. You need to be good with people on the phone organised enough to run your own workload and interested in learning a proper trade.

This is the route into insurance that people struggle to find. Most claims jobs want two years experience. This one trains you pays for your CII qualifications and gives you a dedicated in-house trainer who coaches you one to one.

Who this is for

If you are in a contact centre in complaints in customer service for a utility a housing association a lettings agent or a bank you are closer to being a Trainee Claims Handler than you think. You already run a caseload. You already work to a deadline and to rules someone audits. You already ring people who are having a bad day and sort it out.

That is most of the job. The insurance part is what they teach you.

Also worth a look if you are in retail or hospitality management and want out of evenings and weekends for good.

What you will be doing

Once you are trained a Trainee Claims Handler here will:

  • Take motor claims when they first come in get the details right and tell the customer honestly what happens next
  • Work your own caseload of claims by phone and in writing and keep every one moving
  • Be the point of contact for policyholders and brokers
  • Learn how liability works who was at fault and why
  • Flag anything that does not look right
What you will need
  • Customer service experience in some form contact centre complaints retail hospitality admin
  • Genuinely good on the phone and able to stay calm when someone is not
  • Organised accurate and comfortable picking up new computer systems
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above in English and Maths
  • Willing to work towards the CII Certificate fully funded in work time

Being straight with you

The learning curve is real. Insurance has its own language and it takes a few months before claims feel routine the first ones are hard work. It is also five days a week on site to begin with and you will need to drive because the site is on the edge of Egerton and the bus will not get you there for nine.

What you get for that is a qualification somebody else pays for and a career with somewhere to go. Several of the senior people on this team started exactly where you would.
