Technical Support Officer

• Play a hands-on role supporting world-class environmental research across Western Australias diverse ecosystems.
• Work in a dynamic field-based position combining technical expertise data insights and real-world impact.
• Full-time (1.0 FTE) appointment on a fixed term basis for 3 years.
• Base salary range: $95231 $100643 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

This position will support research within the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) at UWA. TERN is a national network funded by the Australian Governments National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) with activities in WA co-funded by the Government of Western Australia. TERNs vision is to continuously grow long-term national-scale Australian terrestrial ecosystem data used globally. The project includes a diverse team of researchers project staff and industry collaborators to deliver world-class research infrastructure to monitor and understand changes to our environment and climate and enable predictions of future risks.

TERN is housed within the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment. This role also supports the Critical Zone Observatory (CZO) a key component of TERNs Australian Environmental Observatory. The WA node of TERN is responsible for representing operating and translating activities of the CZO and associated monitoring infrastructure with respect to inputs and outputs of relevance to Western Australia.

About the opportunity

• Deliver hands-on technical support for environmental monitoring infrastructure including installation maintenance calibration and troubleshooting of field-based equipment and sensors across remote and regional WA.
• Coordinate and lead fieldwork activities including logistics planning data collection and on-site supervision of students and research assistants in remote environments.
• Support high-quality research outcomes by managing data workflows maintaining QA/QC standards and contributing to technical reporting and environmental data analysis.

About you

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Environmental Science Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent technical trade experience).
• Demonstrated experience in environmental fieldwork including operating and maintaining monitoring equipment and leading field activities in remote locations.
• Strong technical and analytical skills including experience working with environmental data and tools such as Microsoft Office Python or R.
• Proven ability to plan coordinate and deliver work in complex field environments with a strong commitment to safety and risk management.
• Well-developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary research teams.

A current C class drivers licence will be required by the successful applicant. Current Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) training First Aid/CPR or willingness to attain certifications is also a requirement of this position.
