Senior Java SQL Developer

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Java / SQL Developer to join our growing engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing developing and supporting enterprise-grade applications and data solutions. You will work across the full software development lifecycle collaborating with architects developers DevOps engineers business analysts and stakeholders to deliver robust scalable and maintainable solutions.

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated developer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and mentoring junior team members.

Location: Glasgow 3 days/week in the office

Key Responsibilities

• Design develop test and maintain Java-based applications and services.
• Build and optimise complex SQL queries stored procedures and database solutions.
• Develop scalable APIs and microservices architectures.
• Analyse business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
• Troubleshoot and resolve application database and performance issues.
• Participate in code reviews and promote development best practices.
• Ensure adherence to security quality and performance standards.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes.
• Support production systems and critical business applications.
• Mentor junior developers and contribute to the technical growth of the team.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams within Agile delivery environments.

Essential Skills & Experience

Java: 5 years of professional experience with Java (Version 11 or higher preferred).

SQL / Databases: Expert-level knowledge of relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL MySQL Oracle) and query tuning.

Frameworks: Strong experience with Spring Boot Spring Cloud or Hibernate.

Architecture: Deep understanding of Microservices RESTful APIs and Event-Driven Architecture.

Tools: Proficiency with Git CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins/GitLab) and build tools (Maven/Gradle).

Desirable skills:

Scala: Hands-on experience or a strong functional programming background using Scala.

Big Data: Exposure to Apache Spark Kafka or Hadoop ecosystems.

Cloud: Experience with AWS Azure or Google Cloud Platform.

Experience in banking or financial services industry.

Soft Skills

Strong problem-solving abilities.

Clear communication skills.

Ability to lead projects independently.

Qualifications

Degree in Computer Science Software Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).

Relevant industry certifications are desirable.
