Job Summary

A thriving secondary academy in Reading is seeking an organized safety-conscious Science Laboratory Technician to join its dedicated STEM department for an immediate (ASAP) start.

Job Overview

The Science Technician plays a crucial operational role in enabling safe practical scientific learning across Key Stage 3 Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5.

Working alongside the Senior Science Technician and teaching staff you will prepare chemical solutions organize practical equipment trays maintain laboratory machinery and manage chemical inventory in full compliance with CLEAPSS guidelines. This is a full-time ongoing or permanent position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare deliver and retrieve apparatus chemicals and learning materials for daily Biology Chemistry and Physics practical lessons

  • Prepare chemical solutions biological specimens and specialized physics equipment safely

  • Perform routine safety maintenance cleaning and sanitization of laboratory equipment and fume cupboards

  • Maintain inventory registers for chemicals glassware and equipment logging order requests as needed

  • Dispose of chemical and biological waste strictly in accordance with COSHH and CLEAPSS health and safety standards

  • Assist teachers with technical setups during practical examinations and complex laboratory demonstrations

Candidate Requirements

  • Background or qualification in Science (A-Level Science NVQ or degree in Chemistry Biology Physics or related field)

  • Practical understanding of laboratory safety protocols COSHH guidelines and chemical handling procedures

  • Strong organizational skills high attention to detail and ability to work effectively under morning lesson deadlines

  • Previous experience as a school laboratory technician or commercial lab assistant is desirable

  • An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
