A successful secondary school in Birmingham is seeking an ambitious and highly organised School Business Manager to join its leadership team as soon as possible. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced school business finance operations or estates professional to play a key role in the strategic and day-to-day management of a busy school environment.

This is much more than an administrative position. As School Business Manager you will have a direct impact on the effective running of the school supporting senior leaders to make informed decisions managing resources responsibly and ensuring the school provides the best possible environment for students and staff.

The successful candidate will be commercially aware solutions-focused and confident managing a broad range of responsibilities from budgets and procurement to estates compliance and operational planning.


The Role

Working closely with the Headteacher and senior leadership team the School Business Manager will oversee the effective management of the schools business and operational functions.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the schools financial and operational management ensuring resources are used effectively and strategically.

  • Prepare monitor and manage budgets financial forecasts and expenditure.

  • Oversee procurement purchasing and supplier relationships securing value for money wherever possible.

  • Manage estates premises and facilities ensuring the school environment is safe secure well-maintained and fit for purpose.

  • Ensure statutory compliance across areas including health and safety safeguarding fire safety asbestos legionella and other relevant requirements.

  • Coordinate and manage external contractors maintenance providers and service agreements.

  • Support the Headteacher and Governors with financial reporting strategic planning and business decisions.

  • Lead and develop administrative premises finance and support staff where appropriate.

  • Manage school policies systems and procedures relating to business operations.

  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency reduce costs and strengthen operational processes.

  • Contribute to longer-term school improvement capital projects and strategic development.

  • Provide effective leadership during busy periods responding proactively to challenges and finding practical solutions.

No two days will be the same and the successful candidate will need to be comfortable balancing strategic planning with the practical demands of running a busy school.


The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who combines strong commercial awareness with a genuine understanding of the education environment.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have proven experience in school business management finance operations estates or a closely related role.

  • Have strong financial management and budgetary skills.

  • Be confident managing procurement contracts suppliers and external partners.

  • Have a good understanding of health and safety compliance and risk management.

  • Be highly organised analytical and able to manage competing priorities.

  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Be confident working with senior leaders Governors staff and external stakeholders.

  • Be proactive and solutions-focused with the ability to anticipate issues before they become problems.

  • Demonstrate integrity discretion and a high level of professionalism.

  • Be committed to creating an efficient safe and positive environment for students and staff.

Experience within an educational setting would be advantageous but candidates with strong transferable experience from finance facilities operations local government public sector or commercial environments are also encouraged to apply.
