Research Scientist, In Vitro
Job Summary
We are looking for a Research Scientist to execute on the primary-cell culture and engineering workflows that underpin our in vitro research programme. You will isolate culture and engineer primary immune cells produce the viral vectors required for genetic modification and perform the analytical and functional assays used to characterise cell phenotype and activity. Your work will provide the experimental foundation for a broad range of studies across the platform.
This is a highly hands-on bench-based role working closely with our senior scientists and colleagues across the wider research team. You will be responsible not only for executing experiments but also for maintaining robust and reproducible cell-culture systems troubleshooting technical challenges and contributing to the optimisation of experimental workflows. You will work across primary-cell biology molecular cloning viral-vector production flow cytometry and functional assay development and will contribute directly to the generation of high-quality datasets used to guide programme decisions.
The role would suit a scientist who combines strong technical capability with careful experimental practice enjoys working collaboratively and takes pride in establishing reliable biological systems that others can build upon.
- Isolate and culture primary immune cells
- Produce viral vectors and carry out the cloning that supports the engineering work
- Run multi-colour flow cytometry including sorting
- Quantify activation function and phenotype through reporter and functional assays
- Keep the cell-culture running reliably for the whole team
You may be a good fit if you:
- Hold a PhD in immunology or a related field such as bioscience or cell biology. Exceptional candidates with a Masters degree and equivalent experience will also be considered
- Have isolated and cultured primary immune cells within the last two years
- Are strong in mammalian cell culture
- Have hands-on experience with plasmid amplification cloning and virus production
- Are confident running flow cytometry and sorting
- Have strong communication skills and work well as part of a close-knit team
Strong candidates may also have experience with:
- Working with primary mouse cells alongside human material
- Working with adeno-associated virus (AAV)
- Isolating T cells from spleen and other primary tissue
- Working with engineered primary cell systems
- Co-culture and cell-killing assays
- Keeping a record of experimental planning and results in electronic lab notebooks (ELN)
