Pastoral Support Officer Role

The school is seeking a committed and approachable Pastoral Support Officer to provide targeted support to students across the school.

The successful candidate will build positive professional relationships with students and provide practical and pastoral assistance to pupils who may be experiencing difficulties with attendance behaviour relationships confidence engagement or their wider school experience.

The role will involve identifying concerns at an early stage maintaining appropriate records and ensuring that relevant information is communicated to the appropriate members of staff.

You will work closely with pastoral leaders to implement support strategies and monitor individual students. The successful candidate will need to be confident working with young people while maintaining clear professional boundaries.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day pastoral support to students.

  • Build positive respectful and professional relationships with pupils.

  • Identify students who may require additional pastoral intervention.

  • Monitor students experiencing difficulties with attendance behaviour or engagement.

  • Provide one-to-one support where appropriate.

  • Help students develop confidence resilience and positive attitudes towards school.

  • Support students who may be struggling with organisation or school routines.

  • Work closely with Heads of Year tutors and pastoral leaders.

  • Communicate relevant concerns to appropriate members of staff.

  • Maintain accurate records of pastoral interventions.

  • Monitor the effectiveness of individual support strategies.

  • Support students returning following periods of absence.

  • Encourage positive attendance and punctuality.

  • Assist with behaviour interventions where appropriate.

  • Support restorative conversations with students.

  • Liaise professionally with parents and carers.

  • Attend meetings relating to individual student support.

  • Work alongside safeguarding colleagues when concerns are identified.

  • Contribute to student wellbeing initiatives.

  • Help students access appropriate internal support.

  • Promote inclusion and positive student engagement.

  • Maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information.

  • Follow school safeguarding and pastoral procedures.

  • Contribute to a positive and respectful school culture.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have experience working with children or young people and will have a genuine interest in pastoral care and student development.

Previous experience in a school college youth service childrens services or another student-support environment would be advantageous.

You should be approachable patient and able to communicate effectively with young people from a range of backgrounds.

The role requires someone who can remain calm when dealing with challenging situations and who understands the importance of consistency and professional boundaries.

You will also need to be organised as the role involves maintaining records attending meetings and managing support for several students.
