Job Summary

Management Accountant North Bradford 40000 - 50000

Nobody has done this job before you.

Think about the last time you moved into somewhere someone else had lived.

The shelves were already up. Somebody you never met had decided which cupboard the mugs went in which wall the sofa faced and where the one usable plug socket was going to be. It worked more or less. You adapted. And after a few months you stopped noticing the things that irritated you because there was no realistic prospect of changing them.

Most finance roles are that house.

You inherit a month-end timetable built by somebody who left in 2019. A reporting pack that exists in its current form because of a request made years ago by a director who has since moved on. A reconciliation that takes three days because it has always taken three days.

This role is an empty room.

It is newly created. That is the single most important thing to understand about it.

There is no predecessor. No handover spreadsheet with somebody elses logic buried in it. No established way of doing things that you would be expected to preserve out of habit.

That is a turn off to some people and the entire appeal/excitement to others.

The business

A privately owned West Yorkshire business long established and currently going through the most significant modernisation in its history. Investment is going into systems technology reporting and automation driven by an owner who wants the business run on better information rather than longer hours.

Finance is central to that. Over the past year a dedicated FP&A analyst has been added and a Head of Finance brought in. This role is the next deliberate step in building the function out not a backfill for somebody who left.

The job is broader than the title

You will own the monthly management accounts profit and loss by business area balance sheet control and reconciliations budgets reforecasts and rolling cash flow. That is the floor not the ceiling.

Above it sits the part worth a conversation:

  • You deputise for the Head of Finance and be a key figure for them. Written into the role from day one not something you earn in year three
  • Real treasury exposure. Bank and trust accounts invoice discounting foreign exchange HP and lease arrangements
  • A dedicated FP&A analyst works alongside you so you support the modelling rather than being the whole function
  • Oversight across sales ledger purchase ledger payroll and cash
  • No direct reports on day one and a defined route to managing four: Assistant Accountant Sales Ledger Purchase Ledger and Payroll
  • The managers you partner with run operational parts of the business not other accountants

You are not expected to tick every box. Nobody arriving at this level will have done all of that before and nobody is pretending otherwise. Parts of this role will be new to whoever takes it which is rather the point. The exposure you would pick up across treasury cash flow systems projects and eventually leading a team is the kind that normally takes three separate moves to accumulate.

Two projects will pull you well past the month end

The business is expanding its IT estate and finance is the strongest technology user in the building. Whoever takes this role gets pulled into that work rather than having it done to them.

They are also consolidating operations onto one main site a project expected to run eighteen to twenty-four months with multi-million pound investment behind it.

Neither is a project you would normally get near at this level.

Evidence that ideas land here rather than a claim that they do

Earlier this year the finance leadership asked how the purchase ledger could be closed in two weeks rather than the usual grind. The answer came back within a couple of months: five days is achievable let us go to ten first and prove it. It was implemented. Nobody complained. It gave a week back in the diary.

That is a small story and it is the most useful thing in this advert. It tells you what actually happens here when somebody suggests a better way.

Being straight with you

Things are also genuinely imperfect. Processes systems and reporting are mid-rebuild. If you need a settled environment where the method is already agreed you will find this frustrating rather than energising.

And the scope is broader than the salary band suggests. We would rather say that now than at offer stage. What you get for the difference is exposure ownership and a route to leading a team. That is a real trade but only if it is the trade you actually want.

Who this is for

Job titles matter far less here than demonstrable breadth. Assistant accountants management accountants finance officers and qualified-by-experience candidates are all genuinely in scope as are part-qualified and nearly/newly qualified CIMA/ACCA/AC. Nobody is being screened on letters after a name.

What matters is evidence even early on that you have improved something rather than simply operated it. A process you shortened. A report somebody actually uses now. A reconciliation that stopped taking three days.

If you look at an imperfect process and see an opportunity you will do well here. If you look at one and see a risk you will not enjoy it.
