Job Summary
We are excited to be recruiting a Kitchen Apprentice to join our team and learn everything about working in a busy kitchen during a 2-year apprenticeship.
The historic Malt Cross is an iconic bar and kitchen in the heart of Nottingham City Centre. The venue has been welcoming and serving customers to its famous bar for almost 150 years.
As a valuable part of YMCA Robin Hood Group the Malt Cross operates as a not-for-profit venue supporting the work of the YMCA to ensure all children and young people have the opportunity to discover who they are and who they can become within our local communities.
Through the introduction of this Apprenticeship we hope to give someone the opportunity to begin their career in hospitality and discover who they can become too.
Role Highlights
Job Title: Kitchen Apprentice
Location: Malt Cross 16 St Jamess Street Nottingham NG1 6FG
Pay:National Apprenticeship rate: 8 per hour for the first year increasing in the 2nd year to match age-specific minimum wage.
Hours: 30 hours per week plus 1 day release to College to complete your qualification.
The Role
We have careful crafted a 2 year programme to steadily increase your knowledge and responsibility within the kitchen space.
From introducing you to the basics to seeing you produce your own meals we are excited to see you grow thrive and develop you passion for food and cooking.
Over the course of 2 years you can expect to learn:
Food Service & Kitchen Management
- Working as part of a team how to prepare and fulfil food orders and pre-ordered catering to an excellent standard in a timely manner
- Dish and Menu development taking advantage of local and/or seasonal produce.
- Support good stock control by following internal processes to flag low or missing ingredients.
- Liaise with suppliers to order kitchen products and ensure these are processed correctly and in a timely manner
- Build positive relationships with the Bar Manager and their team to ensure smooth service between the kitchen and bar teams
- Work outside of the Kitcehn to support colleagues during busy service periods assisting to serve food clear tables and act as KP if required.
Health Safety and Food Preparation
- Follow all statutory and internal regulations regarding hygiene safety and cleanliness
- Manage and report any incidents of accident fire theft loss and damage as appropriate.
- Prepare food to be allergy safe ensuring adherence to all relevant laws and practice.
Learning and Development
- Actively participate in the apprenticeship programme completing all required coursework and assessments.
- Attend training sessions and workshops as required.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude towards learning and personal development.
- Take on feedback from supervisors and continuously develop culinary skills.

First and foremost you will be passionate about food! You will share our passion for high-quality local seasonal ingredients and the skill of turning them into a meal for people to enjoy.

- GCSEs in English and Maths.
