Housing Caseworker

Location: Remote
Contract: Temporary 3 Month Contract (12 Weeks)
Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday)
Note: Prior council experience is desirable.

Summary

The Housing Caseworker will provide a high-quality housing advice and homelessness prevention service for Dorset Council. This role involves managing a caseload of individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness ensuring compliance with statutory duties under current housing legislation. The successful candidate will assess housing needs develop personalized solutions and work proactively with customers and partner agencies to prevent and relieve homelessness while maintaining accurate case records and delivering excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a comprehensive housing advice and homelessness prevention service in line with current legislation.
  • Manage a caseload of customers who are homeless or threatened with homelessness ensuring accurate and up-to-date case management records.
  • Conduct homelessness assessments and investigations making legally sound statutory decisions.
  • Develop implement and review Personal Housing Plans tailored to individual customer needs.
  • Take proactive steps to prevent homelessness including negotiating with landlords sourcing alternative accommodation and attending court where required.
  • Facilitate access to temporary accommodation in accordance with statutory duties.
  • Provide advice on welfare benefits debt management employment and income maximisation and signpost to appropriate specialist services.
  • Work collaboratively with internal departments and external agencies including social services health professionals probation police and housing providers.
  • Support vulnerable individuals including young people (1617) care leavers and clients with complex needs in line with safeguarding and multi-agency protocols.
  • Maintain a customer-focused approach ensuring empathy professionalism and confidentiality at all times.

Requirements
Requirements:

  • Proven experience working within a local authority housing service or registered housing provider.
  • Strong working knowledge of housing legislation including the Housing Act 1996 and Homelessness Reduction Act 2018.
  • Demonstrable experience preventing homelessness using a range of practical tools and interventions.
  • Experience managing a complex caseload independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of welfare benefits housing options and support services.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate and influence positive outcomes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders and partner agencies.
  • Excellent organizational and IT skills with strong attention to detail.

  • A CIH Level 4 qualification (or equivalent) is desirable.
  • Enhanced DBS check is required.
