We are looking foraFunding Managerto join theHumanities and Social Scienceteam.

Where inWellcomewill I be working

Research Fundingis responsible forthe operational delivery and governance of allWellcomesgrant funding activities. Within this the Funding Management team delivers and manages funding schemes targeted calls majorinvestmentsand one-off applications.
The team works closely with colleagues across Strategic Programmes Legal and Finance to design and implement funding activities managing the full lifecycle of grant applicationsfrom submission and review through to awardfor Discovery Research and Data for Science and Health.

TheHumanities and Social Sciences teamsitwithin this function as part of Discovery Research. They enable curiosity-driven research across molecularcellularand systems-level science as well as research that explores the social culturalhistoricaland ethical contexts of health and wellbeing. They design and deliver funding opportunities manage applications end-to-end and enable robust fair decision-making.

The Humanities and Social Sciences team covers research applications that aim to transform understanding through research in the social cultural political and historical contexts of health wellbeing disease and healthcare including ethical challenges in medicine healthcare and medical research and Arts-led methodologies or approaches embedded within a research programme.

What will I be doing

Youllmanage a portfolio of grants across the full life cyclecarrying out due diligence coordinating expert reviews and funding advisory committees providing clear written feedback makingawardsand responding to queriesso applications are handled fairly efficiently and on time.Youllbe a trusted point of contact for our research community working with colleagues to enableworldclassresearch through inclusive transparent processes.

As a Funding Manager you will:

  • Manage a portfolio of grants throughout their lifecycle from application and due diligence to award and post-award queries ensuring processes are fairefficientandtimely.

  • Coordinate expert reviews and funding committees identifyingappropriate reviewers managingcommunicationsand enabling good governance and decision-making.

  • Provide clear constructive feedback by distilling complex committee discussions intoaccurate accessible advice for applicants.

  • Act as a trusted advisor offering guidance to applicants and colleagues on funding policies assessmentprocessesand best practice.

  • Ensure smooth grant management post-award handling queriesmonitoringcompliance and enabling grant holders to deliver successful outcomes.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement mentoring new team members contributing to funding initiatives and helping shape policies and processes that promote inclusivity and efficiency.

MinimumCriteria:

  • Experience of academic research environment and/or strong understanding of research funding mechanisms and educated to at least degree level in a relevant science medical humanities social science or public health subject.

  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and manage large workloads and work to deadlines.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to summarise complex information and tailor it for specific audiences.

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills - ability to quickly build the trust of internal and external stakeholders.
