We are looking for an Associate Trader to join Sims Limited working within its Sims Metal business and playing a key role in the Sales and Trading function.

Founded in Sydney Australia in 1917 Sims Metal is one of the worlds leading metal recyclers and a business division of Sims Limited. With operations across Australia New Zealand and North America Sims Metal buys processes and sells ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal supplying high-quality furnace-ready recycled raw materials to manufacturers around the world.
This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys the commercial side of business: building relationships identifying opportunities negotiating analysing markets and helping to buy and sell recycled raw materials profitably.
You will work closely with an experienced Senior Trader gaining exposure to customers suppliers commodities and international markets while developing your commercial career within a global organisation.

The opportunity

You will develop your understanding of ferrous and non-ferrous metals recycled raw materials customers suppliers margins and market movements. At the same time you will build the relationships market knowledge and commercial skills needed to progress within Sims Limited.

What will you be doing
As an Associate Trader you will support the Senior Trader in growing volumes developing new business and generating revenue.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Identifying and developing new customer opportunities across Europe.
  • Building strong relationships with existing customers vendors and suppliers.
  • Identifying new vendor and supplier opportunities across the UK mainland Europe and South America.
  • Supporting the buying and selling of ferrous and non-ferrous recycled metals and furnace-ready recycled raw materials.
  • Analysing market intelligence and strategic data to support informed trading decisions.
  • Working with customers and vendors to monitor deliveries and collections.
  • Supporting the monitoring of customer and vendor payments.
  • Visiting customer and supplier sites to develop your knowledge of the metals recycling industry its markets and its operations.
  • Maintaining accurate records of trades meetings and wider commercial activity.
  • Participating in market calls and contributing to market reports.
  • Supporting the Senior Trader in achieving growth volume margin and sales targets.
  • Travelling across the UK and Europe including occasional overnight and international travel.
What are we looking for
You do not need to have followed a traditional trading career path. We are looking for someone with commercial instinct drive and the ability to build credible long-term relationships.
The successful candidate will have:
  • A bachelors degree in any discipline or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Ideally one to two years experience in a commercial sales buying trading or related industry role although strong candidates from other backgrounds will be considered.
  • A genuine interest in sales buying commodities and the commercial side of business.
  • Confidence communicating with a wide range of people.
  • A proactive entrepreneurial mindset and the drive to identify and pursue new opportunities.
  • The resilience and determination to succeed in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong numerical and analytical ability with an interest in margins figures and market intelligence.
  • Good organisational skills and close attention to detail.
  • The ability to build credibility and strong relationships with customers vendors and suppliers.
  • A willingness to travel within the UK and internationally.
  • A full UK driving licence.
Experience within metals recycling commodities or another buying and selling environment would be advantageous but it is not essential.
Most importantly you will be a people person with commercial drive. You will need to be comfortable picking up the phone speaking to new people asking questions building relationships and pursuing opportunities.
