We are looking torecruitaBiomedicalor MechanicalEngineer(assistant professor)to join the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences(EPS)at the Edinburgh campus of Heriot Watt Universityfor maternity ideally haveexpertiseinbiomaterialsas well as design andmanufacture.

The successful candidate willdeliverexistingteaching relevant toMechanicalEngineeringundergraduateand/orBiomedical Engineering postgraduate successful applicant will also help this is a role with a significant amount of responsibility you will have a networkthat will help supportyou.

EPShas250academic staffacross our campuses in Edinburgh Dubai and Malaysiadriving our teaching and research of various disciplines ( Electronic & Computer Engineering; Chemical EngineeringMechanical EngineeringPhysics Chemistryand Biosciences).Our researchinterestsspanbiomedical mechanicalelectricaland chemicalengineeringas well astoxicology brewing and distilling pluschemicalphysicaland biological sciences. All areas are supported by strong external funding with currently >100M of active research arebased in 5 research institutes:Institute of Biological ChemistryBioPhysics&BioEngineering(IB3); Institute of Chemical Sciences (ICS); Institute of Mechanical Process & Energy Engineering (IMPEE); Institute of Photonics & Quantum Sciences (IPaQS); and Institute of Sensors Signals & Systems (ISSS).The successfulapplicantcouldbeassociated with IMPEE andIB3if they are interested.

Purpose of Role

The role holder will be expected to lead and contribute to the deliveryand assessmentofseveral courseswhich couldincludeBiomaterials (postgraduate)Biomanufacturein Bioengineering (postgraduate) Design and Manufacture(undergraduate) and project teaching could change based on theexpertiseof the successful will involve the delivery ofexistinglectures tutorialsandpractical classes and may involveorganisation of external expert speakers andfield trips (e.g. to industry).The successful candidate willhaveopportunities todemonstrateinnovation in teachingand deliver research-led holderwill also be a personal tutor toundergraduatestudents.

Therole holderwill be based inEdinburgh inthe School of Engineering and Physical Sciencesandthe rolewillrequire you to collaborate with colleagues inEPSas well asotherschools atthe Edinburgh campus and potentiallyour overseas campuses in Dubai and will be administrative responsibilitiesassociated with the rolesuch as reporting on marks andstudent performance.

We are interested to considerapplicants with or without researchexperiencein biomaterials and biomedical engineeringand stress thatextensive research experience is not essentialfor this role.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful applicant willbe responsible for

LearningTeachingandScholarship

  • Delivery ofexistingteaching (e.g. lectures tutorials practical classes).
  • Invite external experts to deliver teaching
  • Ensuring students are engaged withthe learning materials
  • Assessing courses (e.g. designing and marking courseworkandexams)
  • Carryingout course related administrative tasks( toexam boardsandparticipatinginrelevant committees)
  • Act asa personal tutor forassignedundergraduatestudents
  • Supervisingstudentprojects
  • Delivering research-led teaching
  • Demonstrating innovation in teaching
  • Liaisingwith colleaguesin Heriot WattUniversityand externally to supportteachingdelivery

Essential

Learning TeachingandScholarship

  • Adegree(PhD levelor equivalentexpertise)in a relevant discipline ( EngineeringBiomaterials or Biomedical Engineering)
  • Willingness and capability to deliverteachingforother engineeringprogrammes relevant totheexpertiseof the role holder
  • Excellentoral and writtencommunication teamworkingand organisationalskills
  • Abilityto work collaboratively with colleagues
  • Willingness todemonstrateversatility and flexibility

Desirable

Learning TeachingandScholarship

  • Experience of developing/delivering training/teaching material.
  • Ideas forinnovation in teaching
  • Familiarity with online communication tools such as Teams Canvas or Blackboard

Researchor Professional Experience

  • Chartered Engineer and Member of the IMechE or equivalent engineering institution.
  • Commitment to adopting principles of diversity equity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • A Postgraduate certificate in teaching in higher education.
  • Experience of supervisionor mentoringof studentsor colleagues
