The engineering team works across data engineering machine learning business analytics and backend development. It builds scalable platforms pipelines and tools that help data science and commercial teams launch experiments improve decision-making and deliver reliable production systems.

The Role

The Senior/Staff Data Engineer will provide technical leadership while designing and improving large-scale data and machine-learning systems. The position offers end-to-end ownership and close collaboration with experienced engineers product owners data scientists and business stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership to improve the scalability quality accuracy speed and efficiency of existing data and machine-learning processes
  • Design build test and maintain data pipelines platforms libraries and engineering tools
  • Support data science and business teams in launching experiments into production
  • Analyse complex datasets to support commercial and technical decision-making
  • Develop tools that automate large-scale data management analysis and machine-learning activities
  • Build reliable systems that allow experiments and new solutions to be deployed rapidly
  • Maintain high standards of data quality software design testing and engineering best practices
  • Take end-to-end ownership of systems from initial design through production deployment and ongoing improvement

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science Information Systems Engineering or a related discipline
  • At least 6 years of software engineering experience
  • At least 4 years of experience in data engineering or machine-learning engineering
  • Expert-level experience designing developing and maintaining data pipelines and data systems
  • Strong expertise in SQL and Python 3
  • Strong experience with a JVM-based programming language such as Java or Scala
  • Hands-on experience with technologies such as Scala Apache Spark Hadoop SQL and cloud object storage
  • Strong understanding of software architecture design patterns functional programming object-oriented programming and engineering best practices
  • Experience ensuring data quality reliability and scalability
  • Familiarity with general machine-learning concepts and common models including regularisation and tree-based models
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis concepts such as p-values and z-scores
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
  • A data-driven engineering mindset
  • Professional English communication skills

Desirable Experience

  • Strong understanding of the Hadoop ecosystem and big-data architecture
  • Commercial Scala or Scala Spark development experience
  • Experience working in an Agile engineering environment
  • Experience with test-driven development methodologies
  • Linux systems administration knowledge
  • Experience supporting data science machine-learning experimentation or performance-marketing platforms
