Job Summary

Purpose of the Role

The Nursing Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for the nursing service across the hospital. This senior role is accountable for patient safety the quality of the patient experience and the effective management of human and material resources.

The incumbent sets the nursing vision for the facility translates it into executable plans and ensures that clinical excellence and compassionate care remain central to all nursing activities.

Duties andResponsibilities
  • Compile implement and continuously monitor a hospital-specific nursing strategy aligned to the organisational objectives.
  • Translate strategic nursing goals into measurable operational plans and performance targets.
  • Report on nursing strategy progress to executive leadership and recommend adjustments as required.
  • Champion a culture of clinical excellence evidence-based practice and zero-harm patient safety across all nursing units.
  • Oversee infection prevention and control programmes ensuring full regulatory compliance.
  • Lead and coordinate clinical audits accreditation processes and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Implement and monitor risk management frameworks to identify and mitigate clinical risks proactively.
  • Manage nursing budgets expenditure and financial controls in line with approved allocations.
  • Ensure optimal staffing levels skill-mix and deployment to meet patient care demands efficiently.
  • Oversee procurement and management of nursing equipment consumables and other resources.
  • Drive staff productivity and maintain operational efficiency across all nursing departments.
  • Define and uphold patient experience standards ensuring a compassionate dignified and person-centred care environment.
  • Implement effective patient complaint management processes; personally lead resolution of complex or escalated matters.
  • Monitor patient satisfaction data and drive continuous improvement in service delivery.
  • Lead mentor and develop nursing staff fostering a high-performance and engaged workforce.
  • Oversee recruitment onboarding performance management and succession planning for the nursing team.
  • Manage employee relations matters in accordance with applicable labour legislation and HR policies.
  • Identify training needs and promote continuous professional development across the nursing complement.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with medical staff allied health professionals hospital leadership funders and regulatory bodies.
  • Represent the nursing function in multidisciplinary forums hospital governance structures and external accreditation bodies.
  • Collaborate with clinical and non-clinical departments to ensure integrated seamless patient care delivery.

Knowledge and Experience
  • Minimum of 7 years experience as a Professional Nurse
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in a Nursing Management or leadership role
  • In-depth knowledge of nursing functional practice and applicable nursing legislation
  • Auditing accreditation and clinical governance processes within a hospital environment
  • Clinical risk management frameworks and patient safety methodologies
  • Continuous improvement and quality assurance methodologies (e.g. ISO COHSASA JCI standards)
  • Financial management principles applicable to a nursing/clinical environment
  • Human resource processes including performance management employee relations and labour legislation
  • Infection prevention and control standards and protocols
  • Patient complaint management best practice

Educational Qualifications
  • Professional Nurse qualification (registered with the South African Nursing Council or relevant national body)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Health Services Management/Nursing Management or an accredited equivalent management qualification
  • Current and valid registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) or equivalent regulatory body -mandatory and non-negotiable
  • Registration must be maintained in good standing throughout employment
