Senior Research Officer (Adhoc)
Job Summary
The Senior research officer will support data collection analysis reporting for the Quality Improvement Project midline/learning assessment study across Jigawa Gombe and Ekiti States.
Three positions will be filled with one Senior Research Officer assigned to each of the three implementation states Jigawa Gombe and Ekiti. Each Senior Research Officer will be supervised by the Research and Learning Manager to ensure consistency security and comparability of data across the three states. All three positions carry an identical scope of responsibilities covering the full data lifecycle from tools digitization and revision training facilitation real-time data quality assurance integrated quantitative and qualitative data management and analysis and reporting support.
- Data Tools Revision and Digital Configuration
- Support the review and revision of quantitative and qualitative data collection instruments including facility readiness checklists provider knowledge assessments clinical observation guides client exit interviews KII/FGD guides and the QI Maturity Index tool.
- Support programming configuration and deployment of digital data collection tools on KoboCollect/KoboToolbox including skip logic validation rules calculated fields and user access settings.
- Assist in the setup maintenance and monitoring of KoboToolbox user accounts data submission pipelines and digital data collection systems across the evaluation states.
- Support pre-testing and piloting of digital tools and document feedback for incorporation into final field-ready versions.
- Maintain version control and documentation of all approved data collection tools and data management systems.
- Training Facilitation and Data Quality Support
- Support facilitation of national-level Facilitator Training and state-level Training of Trainers (ToTs) on evaluation procedures digital data collection tools data quality standards and reporting requirements.
- Demonstrate and support training on KoboCollect use device management offline data capture synchronization procedures and troubleshooting.
- Assist with administration of pre- and post-tests simulation exercises role plays and trainee assessments.
- Support preparation and dissemination of data collection guides standard operating procedures (SOPs) quick reference materials and job aids for field teams.
- Provide ongoing technical support to supervisors and data collectors throughout the training and field implementation periods.
- Data Collection Monitoring and Quality Assurance
- Support monitoring of real-time data submissions from the assigned state and conduct routine data quality checks for completeness consistency accuracy and timeliness.
- Assist in identifying and documenting outliers duplicate records missing data and data entry errors for corrective action by field teams.
- Support daily data review meetings and debrief sessions with field supervisors and data collection teams.
- Participate in spot checks back checks and verification activities to strengthen adherence to data quality standards.
- Work closely with Senior Research Officers in other states to promote consistency in data quality procedures and reporting.
- Escalate data quality concerns implementation challenges and operational risks to the State Team Lead and Research and Learning Advisor as required.
- Mixed-Methods Data Management and Analysis Support
- Support cleaning validation and organization of quantitative datasets from KoboToolbox and other approved sources.
- Assist in preparing analysis-ready datasets in Microsoft Excel STATA R SPSS or other approved software.
- Support quantitative analysis activities including descriptive statistics indicator calculations data summaries and comparative analyses.
- Assist with transcription translation organization and quality review of qualitative data collected through KIIs and FGDs.
- Support the setup and maintenance of qualitative coding projects using NVivo Dedoose or equivalent software.
- Assist in maintaining secure storage and management of qualitative and quantitative datasets in accordance with approved protocols.
- Support analysis of DHIS2/HMIS and other routine health information system data to assess trends and performance indicators.
- Maintain organized documentation of datasets codebooks analytical outputs and data processing procedures.
- Reporting and Data Visualization Support
- Support development of tables charts figures dashboards and other data visualization products for reports and presentations.
- Assist in generating routine data summaries and analytical outputs required for technical review and decision-making.
- Contribute data-related inputs to evaluation reports presentations technical briefs and dissemination materials.
- Support preparation of data annexes codebooks datasets and supporting documentation for submission to stakeholders.
- Assist with incorporating feedback from technical reviewers and stakeholders into revised analytical products.
- Data Security Ethics and Compliance
- Support compliance with Jhpiego data protection policies ethical approvals and evaluation protocols.
- Assist in ensuring data anonymization secure storage and restricted access to evaluation data.
- Support implementation of data security measures including password protection access controls and secure file-sharing procedures.
- Monitor adherence to informed consent confidentiality and ethical research requirements during data collection and management activities.
- Report any data security or ethics concerns promptly to the supervisor.
- Collaboration and Administrative Support
- Work closely with the Research and Learning Advisor State Team Lead Programme Specialist Senior Research Managers field supervisors and other evaluation team members to support implementation of evaluation activities.
- Support coordination of data-related activities across the assigned state and contribute to consistency across the three evaluation states.
- Participate in technical review meetings validation workshops and stakeholder engagements as assigned.
- Provide logistical and technical support for evaluation activities workshops trainings and dissemination events.
- Prepare activity updates and contribute to progress reporting as requested by supervisors.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Research and Learning Advisor State Team Lead or Jhpiego management in support of the evaluation.
Education
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Statistics Public Health Social Sciences or a related field.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in research monitoring evaluation and learning (MEL) or impact evaluation within health or development programmes.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing mixed-methods and/or quasi-experimental evaluations including tools revision training and mixed-methods analysis.
- Strong experience working with large routine health datasets (DHIS2/HMIS) and programmatic data.
- Experience coordinating multi-site or multi-state evaluations in Nigeria strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with Quality Improvement (QI) methodologies (PDSA cycles run charts root-cause analysis) and with national programmes for TB HIV Malaria and MNCH; direct experience with the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLCP) is an added advantage.
- Experience with Global Fund or other donor-funded programmes and with national/sub-national health systems is strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to deliver high-quality analytical outputs and reports under tight timelines.
Required Technical Skills & Software Proficiency
Quantitative Analysis & MEL Tools
- Statistical software: STATA (preferred) R SPSS or equivalent hands-on analytical experience.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel (pivot tables Power Query complex formulas).
- Dashboards and visualization: Power BI Tableau or equivalent (preferred).
Qualitative Analysis Tools
- NVivo or equivalent qualitative analysis software hands-on experience with coding thematic analysis and triangulation.
Health Information Systems & Data Collection Platforms
- Interpretive and analytical experience with DHIS2 and routine health management information systems.
- Digital data collection platforms: KoboCollect/KoboToolbox ODK or similar.
Documentation & Collaboration
- Microsoft Word (technical documentation evaluation reports and annexes).
- Microsoft PowerPoint (analytical and validation presentations).
- Collaboration platforms: Microsoft Teams SharePoint Google Workspace.
Knowledge Skills & Competencies
- Strong grounding in mixed-methods evaluation methodology and statistical reasoning.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to synthesise complex information into clear defensible narratives.
- High attention to data quality documentation and reproducibility.
- Ability to explain complex quantitative and qualitative findings to non-technical audiences including government stakeholders.
- Strong facilitation and training skills for national and state-level audiences.
- Strong organisational coordination and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently while coordinating closely with technical leadership and government partners.
