Consultant General Surgeon
Job Summary
The Consultant General Surgeon will provide comprehensive surgical care including elective and emergency surgical procedures. The role requires advanced surgical expertise leadership of the surgical unit and effective management of trauma abdominal and soft tissue surgical conditions within a multidisciplinary hospital environment.
Perform a wide range of general surgical procedures including abdominal gastrointestinal and soft tissue surgeries.
Manage emergency surgical cases such as acute abdomen bowel obstruction appendicitis and trauma injuries.
Conduct pre-operative assessments and post-operative care management.
Perform ward rounds and supervise surgical inpatient care.
Provide outpatient surgical consultations and follow-up care.
Carry out emergency surgeries including laparotomies and wound management.
Collaborate with anaesthetists radiologists and other surgical specialties.
Manage surgical complications and post-operative infections.
Participate in trauma call rota and emergency surgical response.
Supervise junior doctors medical officers and surgical residents.
Ensure proper documentation of surgical procedures and patient outcomes.
Lead surgical audits morbidity and mortality reviews.
Develop and implement surgical protocols and standards of care.
Participate in multidisciplinary clinical meetings and case discussions.
Ensure adherence to infection prevention and surgical safety standards.
Provide guidance on wound care stoma care and surgical rehabilitation.
Contribute to hospital quality improvement and clinical governance programs.
Participate in community outreach programs on surgical health awareness.
MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
Fellowship of West African College of Surgeons (FWACS General Surgery) or equivalent.
Full registration and valid practising licence with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
Additional international surgical fellowship is an advantage.
Minimum of 5 years post-fellowship experience in general surgery.
Strong experience in emergency and elective surgical procedures.
Experience in high-volume surgical or tertiary hospital environment preferred.
Advanced surgical and operative skills.
Strong clinical judgment and decision-making ability.
Ability to manage emergency surgical cases under pressure.
Leadership and team supervision capability.
Excellent communication and patient counselling skills.
High attention to detail and adherence to surgical protocols.
Proficiency in surgical documentation and reporting systems.
