Trainee Network Controller

Due to the success of our trainee programme one of our trainees has progressed into a Network Controller role and were now looking for someone to fill the vacancy.

About the role

The Trainee Network Controller is an operational support role within the Network Control Centre. While it offers a clear pathway to becoming a Network Controller it is a standalone role in its own right - youll be making a genuine contribution from day one.

You will play a key role in studying fault data to improve our response plans creating and checking high-voltage switching instructions and assisting Network Controllers with real-time operations. Youll also help ensure Powercos network operating policies and procedures are followed every day.

About You

Youll need an electrical trade certificate (e.g. Level 4 or above) or a tertiary qualification in electrical engineering or a related discipline or equivalent experience in the electricity distribution sector with a strong electrical theory understanding. A background in electricity distribution would be an advantage but we also welcome applicants who have worked as electricians inspectors line mechanics cable jointers or in related electrical fields.

We value training and developing our people. You wont be expected to walk in knowing our systems or processes everything you need to succeed in this role will be taught. As part of the role youll work towards the Connexis Level 4 Network Controller Certificate a nationally recognised industry qualification supported by internal assessors within the team.

What matters most is that you bring the right attitude a willingness to learn and a solid foundation in the electrical industry.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Fault Data Analysis: Study fault data to improve responses and identify better solutions.
  • Real-time Network Operation: Support the operation of the high-voltage (HV) network.
  • Switching Instructions: Create and check high-voltage switching instructions.
  • Complex Situation Analysis: Analyse and help resolve complex electrical network issues.
  • Record Maintenance: Keep accurate records of network outages incidents and events.
  • Policy Adherence: Ensure Powercos network operating policies are followed.
  • Competency Development: Work towards gaining the competency required to become a Network Controller.

It would be ideal if you have:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to be confident and decisive in demanding situations (e.g. storms unplanned outages).
  • High competence with technology.
  • Experience in the electricity sector with electricity distribution experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with protection systems SCADA or Outage Management systems.
