Tewhiwhingamahi: The opportunity

We are seeking a Kai Manaaki to join our Child Health team.


As Kai Manaaki you will work alongside the extended care team andvarious healthprogrammes within thePinnacle Midlands Health Network in theLakes Manaakiplaya key rolewithin ourservices available to the communityandare comfortableworking withtamariki(children) whānau(family) andwhaiora(health users)from varyingcultures focus will be to work alongside the Child Health and Community Nurse team to support amobile outreach service for immunisations.


As a Kai Manaaki you offer valuable network knowledge that can be utilised to provide support options to whānau and other health users with the aim to improve equitable health outcomes. A key goal is to work in a solution focussed way you will work alongside whānau and identify enablers which empower whānau in achieving tīno rangatiranga (self-determination).


Our Kai Manaaki also work closely with the extended care team to identify enablers for achieving equitable health outcomes across the Taupō and Tūrangi communities. Effective communication skills are necessary as Kai Manaaki are contacting and liaising with whānau as well as central and local service providers daily. An understanding of a te ao Māori approach will help guide engagement while developing trusting relationships built on key values such as tika (with fairness) pono (with integrity) and aroha (with compassion).


Utilising your community knowledge you will work with whānau to support their developing knowledge and understanding of Hauora (health and well-being) while connecting them with local service options as needed. This may include providing access to information in a way that whānau feel informed and confident in their health decision making.


Reporting to the Child Immunisation Improvement Nurse you will support whānau to liaise with and navigate the health system through the community general practice and immunisation services prioritising a whānau and child health focus.


This role is part-time working 32 hours per week.

In order tobe successful in this role you will:

  • Haveahigh levelof culturalintelligenceknowledgeand experience of Māori models of healthand wellbeingand a commitment towards achieving equity for Māori.
  • A strong understanding of Tikanga Māori along with a sound understanding of the principles of the TeTiritio Waitangi and how these relate to specific initiatives for Māori health.
  • Embrace the philosophy ofwhanau led decision making
  • Have a NZQA Level 4 healthcare qualification / similar equivalent or be prepared to work towards this.
  • Have relevant lived experience so you can use yourmātauranga(knowledge) to influence positive health outcomes and support people on their journey to wellbeing.
  • Value the importance ofmanaakitanga and a collaborative approach with whānau.
