Max pay rate: $23/hour

Under the general supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, performs highly skilled and specialized maintenance and repair work on golf course turf equipment and mechanical equipment. Provides service to a variety of complex vehicles, machinery, motors and related turf equipment.

Individuals assigned to this classification must report to work per their assigned schedule, which may include nights, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation: If assigned, employees in this classification will be required to report and carry out duties as directed for the duration of an emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Incumbents may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
  • Performs repairs on standard and specialized turf equipment and mechanical equipment i.e., pick-up trucks, fairway mowers, tractors, top dressers and rough mowers.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and overhauls hydraulics, ignitions, air brakes and steering and suspension systems.
  • Test drives vehicles to ascertain repair effectiveness.
  • Performs preventive maintenance according to assigned schedules, i.e., changing oil, tires, transmission fluid and tune ups.
  • Inspects, adjusts and replaces valves, pistons, bearings, cooling, fuel ignition and exhaust systems.
  • Responds to on-site emergencies and performs any necessary repairs.
  • Ensures the availability of adequate parts and supplies, monitors expenditures.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records. Performs other record maintenance duties i.e., parts and supplies per work order, maintenance logs.
  • Provides training, guidance and assistance to other division personnel as directed.
  • Performs metal fabrication and welding as needed.
  • Performs repairs to specialized machinery reel cutting equipment.
  • Maintains current knowledge of new technologies in the trade.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks.
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle in performance of assigned tasks.
  • Performs other related duties as required.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



Education and Experience
  • High school diploma/GED and additional six (6) months of advanced study or technical training.
  • Three (3) years of experience in gas, diesel and turf equipment service and repair.
Licenses or Certifications
  • Must possess a valid state drivers license and obtain a valid Florida drivers license within thirty (30) days of hire or promotion.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Technical training in specialized golf course equipment.


ADDITIONAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES


Knowledge of:

  • The standard and specialized repair practices, tools and equipment of the trade.
  • The assembly, operation, repair and maintenance of automotive gas and diesel engines, mechanical systems, brakes and suspension systems.
  • Report and record maintenance principles and practices.
  • Business English, the application of such to a variety of formats, styles, and editing principles and techniques.
  • General housekeeping practices.
  • The occupational hazards, personal protective equipment required, and safety precautions of the work.
Skill in:
  • The efficient and safe operation of tools and equipment and handling of chemicals used in performing job functions.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosis of defects, malfunctions and inefficiency in turf equipment.
  • Oral and written communications for effective expression, issuing and receiving instructions, clarity in task assignment, and in the interest of public relations.
  • Use of modern office equipment and various computer programs and applications, to include Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Organization, attention to detail, listening, prioritization, and time management.
Ability to:
  • Learn Citywide administrative regulations; applicable Citywide departmental policies; Personnel Ordinance and Collective Bargaining Agreements as required to complete tasks and assignments.
  • Learn Department computer systems and applications associated with job functions.
  • Learn maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.
  • Select appropriate methods of repair, and to exercise efficient use of resources.
  • Operate both heavy and hand-held grounds maintenance equipment and tools in a manner consistent with observing prescribed safety and hazard precautions.
  • Prepare, verify and maintain accurate relevant computer-based logs and records.
  • Relate to people beyond giving and receiving instructions, to include applying consistent courtesy and tact in considerable public contact and/or confrontational situations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, outside agencies and the public.
  • Adapt to performing under frequent deadlines and/or in response to emergencies.
  • Apply sound judgment and interpretation based on acquired knowledge in circumstances where limited standardization exists.
  • Read and interpret various technical materials, maps, and drawings, ranging from moderate to complex terminology, associated with job functions i.e., Safety Data Sheets (SDS), equipment preventative maintenance requirements.
  • Compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, or composite characteristics of mechanical components, machinery, meters, gauges, electronic controls and equipment, and documentation.
  • Inspect equipment, supplies and materials for quality, for preventive maintenance needs, and to estimate time and materials for assigned projects.
  • Organize and review work for efficient results and accuracy.
  • Perform a basic routine vehicle safety inspection to include signals, lights, tires and fluid levels.
  • Draw valid conclusions in task processing and prioritization.
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively in Standard English.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide, calculate decimals and percentages and compute ratio and proportion.
  • Inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various types of information.

The position involves heavy physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Tasks involve frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, some unassisted lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavy objects up to 100 pounds with the assistance of other employees and/or equipment as appropriate. Requires excellent eye/hand/foot coordination for operating standard and specialized electrical and gas- operated equipment.

Requires the ability to speak, hear (perceive sound) and/or signal people to convey and exchange information; differentiate between colors or shades of color; read a variety of materials, at times complex; apply principles of rational problem-solving; record and deliver information, explain procedures, issue and follow oral and written instructions; and communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English.
