Lower School Learning and Literacy Specialist

The Lower School Learning and Literacy Specialist will support students with a variety of learning styles by providing intervention, remediation, and extension for students both in the classroom and in small group settings. The Learning and Literacy Specialist will also support teachers in meeting the range of learning needs of their students within an inclusive classroom. The Learning and Literacy Specialist will possess expertise in language-based learning differences, be trained in reading remediation programs, and be prepared to develop, implement, and promote an exceptional program to ensure the growth of literacy skills in students. The Learning and Literacy Specialist will also work closely with and support students to improve their literacy skills and development of executive functioning skills, which will allow them to flourish in an inclusive independent school setting.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Designing, promoting, and leading an exceptional reading remediation program for students with language-based learning differences in our Learning Center
  • Providing students throughout our inclusive program with additional support in reading, writing, math, and executive functioning skills, individually and in small groups in the Learning Center
  • Teaching at least reading group as needed, including one small, multi-grade reading class
  • Equipping students with the literacy skills they need to increase independence, confidence, and success in all areas
  • Working closely with classroom teachers to support them in providing and implementing curriculum and literacy-based activities or assignments
  • Meeting with outside specialists as requested
  • Supporting teachers in differentiation for a variety of learners in their classroom
  • Collaborating with classroom teachers to develop literacy-based and executive functioning goals for all appropriate students with in IDEAL s Zenith and Dylan Programs and follows up on the progress of goals throughout the year
  • Using formative and summative assessment to document student progress and achievement; assessing and analyzing student strengths and needs; designing and implementing appropriate instruction to facilitate learning and growth
  • Communicating with families regarding skills, strategies, and carryover plans for vacations and summer break
  • Partnering effectively and fostering opportunities for collaboration and partnership with colleagues, administrators, and parents
  • Participating in CSE meetings and impartial hearings as requested
  • Assisting Lower School Head in reviewing progress reports for students in the Zenith and Dylan Programs as requested
  • Attending and participating in weekly faculty meetings, committee meetings, school functions, and professional development activities during and after school hours as needed, appropriate, and assigned.
  • Upholding the mission, philosophy, principles, policies, and procedures of IDEAL
  • Meeting deadlines for progress reports, learning specialist reports, and other work
  • Remaining current with best practices in pedagogy, literacy, and differentiation and engaging in and leading routine and strategic professional development


Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in appropriate field, Masters preferred, training and certification as a special education teacher or learning specialist required
  • Experience with reading remediation programs ( Wilson, PAF, Teachers College writing and reading workshops, Orton Gillingham, etc)
  • Knowledge of relevant technology
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • At least two years experience in a relevant area
  • Growth mindset and a sense of humor
