As the person hired for this position, you will assist with collecting biological and physical data concerning fisheries and/or implementing fisheries habitat projects. The work will be conducted on and off the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. Senior crew members and project biologists will direct your work on projects relating to fish research, habitat, and harvest. Tasks may include working with hand and power tools, 4-wheel drive pickup trucks (with and with-out trailers in tow), all-terrain vehicles and boats. Many of the tasks you perform will be routine and/or repetitive. Some of the work is in an office setting. The majority of work is field work that is physically demanding and involves exposure to all types of weather, slippery rocks, trails, uneven terrain, insects, poison oak, rough or fast-moving water, or cold-water temperatures. The work shift is generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and sometimes includes working longer shifts (10-12 hours), weekends and holidays. You will be expected to be to work on time for assigned work shifts; and hours are usually 40 hours per week but may be less depending on workload.
We are looking for someone who is agreeable to working on a team, wants to help others, and shows initiative in completing assigned tasks. You will be asked to develop and maintain excellent interpersonal skills for maintaining good relations with team members as well as members of the public. Needed for the job are basic math and reading skills, and the ability to clearly and accurately record information in field notebooks, electronic data loggers, and desktop computers. You will also need the ability to learn to identify juvenile and adult fish and to obtain equipment certifications for operation specific to assigned duties.

Typical work includes long daily hikes to count fish redds (nests) in and along remote streams and rivers while wearing chest waders and wading boots and carrying equipment. Much of the work requires the ability to maintain footing in fast-moving water and you must be able to swim. Night-time snorkeling in area streams to count and catch fish may be required. Duties also include processing juvenile fish at remote fish traps and adult fish at the Warm Springs National Fish Hatchery where you will need to put your hands in extremely cold water to process fish that will be returned to the stream. Work aboard boats may be required. You should have the ability to handle buckets of water or gear weighing up to 65 pounds on uneven ground. Work regularly occurs in the Warm Springs River canyon and others in extreme heat (sometimes above 100 degrees F), and cold (sometimes 15-20 degrees F) with rain, snow and wind. Camping out for one to three nights may be required but is not anticipated. Some travel is required.
