Position Description

The IDEAL School of Manhattanseeks a high-energy, passionate educator to work as an Assistant Teacher in our Next Steps Transition Program, apost-secondary program dedicated to supporting individuals, ages 18-21, with varying abilities in an inclusive and community setting. The program supports each student s continued progress in social-emotional, adaptive-life, executive functioning, and vocational skills and supports students and families in planning for their next steps, changing the focus from educational to adult services.


In this role, the Assistant Teacher will be supervised by the Director of Next Steps and work directly with one assigned student, as well as the young adults in the Next Steps Program, to provide meaningful support in both community and academic settings. This candidate will support individuals to increase their independence across academic, social, vocational, and community travel-based settings. In addition, this candidate will promote independence in activities of daily living.

This person must have a strong ability to collaborate with teachers, administration, and families, as well as communicate effectively with potential internship hosts at work sites. In addition, this person will work with a team to create individual goals for those in the transition program. Experience working with High School students and/or young adults, experience working with individuals with disabilities, and the ability to implement creative support strategies are essential qualities. Assistant Teacher will be asked to lead lessons to target skills across multiple disciplines.

Responsibilities for this job include, but are not limited to, the following:

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct support, supervision, and modification for an assigned 1:1 student throughout the day, or ensure a colleague is supporting your assigned 1:1 student as needed by the team

  • Oversee, promote, and monitor the safety of your assigned student 1:1 student at all times

  • Ensure all lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of and support the growth and inclusion of your assigned 1:1 student

Internship Responsibilities:

  • Support individuals in completing vocational tasks and model tasks for them as needed

  • Help individuals integrate vocational skills from a classroom setting into an internship site

  • Transition individuals to and from vocational based internship sites

  • Support both the transition students and the job site supervisors to ensure success

  • Observe and evaluate individuals work to determine progress, provide feedback, and make suggestions for continued growth

  • Monitor and record progress and help individuals meet vocational goals

  • Support individuals in maintaining records

  • Communicate proactively with families to serve as a bridge among transition student, family, internship site, and administration

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Design activities and lead lessons to target real-world skills across multiple subjects, under the direction of the Director Of Next Steps

  • Modify tasks both in class and in the community

  • Support individuals academic needs

  • Work closely with Director of Next Steps Program

  • Support students when distance learning if needed

Community Responsibilities:

  • Provide support with daily living skills

  • Travel with individuals to to access goods and services in the community (e.g., the bank, the grocery store, the post office)

  • Support individuals in travel training and navigating the community

  • Support individuals in leisure time and help identify non-academic areas of interest

  • Assist students with feeding and toileting as needed

  • Help build connections within the community

  • Provide academic support to select students who choose to audit a college course


Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Special Education, Secondary Education, or a relevant field required
  • Appreciation for the mission of The IDEAL School of Manhattan and commitment to social justice
  • Experience supporting individuals of all abilities
  • Experience with High School aged students or young adults
  • A desire to make a difference in the school--to contribute time and talent outside of the classroom and assigned duties to the growth of individuals and the school
  • A strong understanding of differentiation
  • The ability to collaborate as a part of a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills
  • Some Next Steps students with physical disabilities may require assistance in toileting and feeding. The applicant should be comfortable with this, should it be required.
