Job Summary:
Under the direction and supervision of the principal or designee the counselor will serve as a collaborative leader within the school counseling department and work closely with school staff parents students and the community to create a supportive climate where all students can achieve academic social-emotional and postsecondary success. The counselor will provide leadership in the implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the ASCA National Model and district strategic goals.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive secondary counseling experience and demonstrated expertise in areas such as High School and Beyond Planning (HSBP) graduation pathways NCAA eligibility and requirements AVID Programming multilingual learner support master scheduling postsecondary planning and intervention systems via an MTSS model. This position requires a student-centered leader who can support and guide fellow counselors strengthen systems and processes and advocate for equitable access and outcomes for all students.
School counselors enhance the learning process and promote academic achievement by helping students develop college career and life readiness skills while fostering positive relationships and meaningful postsecondary opportunities.
Essential Job Functions:
This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:
- Provide leadership and collaboration within the counseling department to support consistent practices comprehensive programming and alignment with building and district goals.
- Serve as a resource and mentor for counseling staff regarding best practices in secondary counseling graduation pathways NCAA eligibility postsecondary planning and student support systems.
- Advise confer and communicate with parents EVHS staff and school district personnel regarding student progress graduation status postsecondary readiness and intervention planning.
- Provide academic career and social-emotional guidance for students under his/her direction.
- Provide counseling services for students individually or in small groups.
- Develop and deliver informational presentations to classrooms families and high school community events related to college and career readiness graduation requirements financial aid NCAA eligibility and postsecondary opportunities.
- Demonstrate expertise in High School and Beyond Planning (HSBP) and guide students in developing meaningful postsecondary plans aligned to their goals and graduation pathways.
- Collaborate with administrators and staff to support the development and implementation of the master schedule while ensuring equitable student access to rigorous coursework and graduation requirements.
- Support AVID initiatives and college-going culture efforts throughout the building.
- Through collaboration with our ML Teacher this position asks this person to support multilingual learners and culturally diverse student populations through equitable counseling practices family outreach and individualized academic planning/support.
- Foster connections with middle school counselors and staff to strengthen transitions for students between middle school and high school.
- Communicate with administration/staff regarding high-risk students and referrals to outside agencies alternative pathway programs intervention teams and support services.
- Assist students and families with NCAA eligibility requirements transcript reviews and college athletic compliance processes.
- Assistant with state and district assessments.
- Observe and evaluate students academic performance and develop individual success plans to ensure on-time graduation and successful postsecondary transitions.
- Maintain and promote ones own professional growth through coursework workshops conferences professional organizations and current educational research.
- Know current state and district graduation requirements and advise students toward successful completion of graduation and postsecondary goals.
- Follow the ASCA Ethical Standards for school counselors and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Serve as an active member and leader of PLT and other leadership teams to ensure that the direction of the Counseling Department is aligned with Building and District Strategic Plan goals.
- Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
- Maintain a consistent presence at the assigned work site and work the regular work horse specified by the contract.
- Professionally interact with colleagues members of the public and students.
- Comply with and uphold all district policies and all applicable laws.
- Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
Desired Skills:
- Extensive successful experience as a secondary school counselor preferably at the high school level.
- Demonstrated leadership experience within a counseling department professional learning team or school leadership structure.
- Knowledge of current trends and best practices in Comprehensive School Counseling Programs and the ASCA National Model.
- Demonstrated expertise in graduation requirements High School and Beyond Planning (HSBP) credit review transcript analysis and postsecondary readiness planning.
- Experience with NCAA eligibility requirements college admissions processes scholarships financial aid and career readiness programming.
- Experience supporting AVID programs and promoting a college and career readiness culture.
- Experience supporting multilingual learners and culturally diverse student populations through equitable counseling and advocacy practices.
- Knowledge and experience with master scheduling processes and course planning at the secondary level.
- Knowledge in Section 504 and IDEA laws and responsibilities for school counselors.
- Successful experience identifying scholarships and postsecondary opportunities for students.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of current educational developments and the ability to implement a variety of counseling and instructional methodologies.
- Ability to demonstrate a thorough understanding of adolescent development the instructional/learning process and effective intervention strategies.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Washington State teaching certificate no later than the first contracted day of the 2026/2027 school year with appropriate endorsements as required by law and regulations.
- School Counselor endorsement required.
- Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance.
- Valid Washington state drivers license or evidence of mobility.
- Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later).
- I9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
- Completion of all district required training within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is usually confined to a work area; required to have precise control of fingers and hand movements; experiences constant interruptions and inflexible deadlines; must be able to work at a computer monitor for prolonged periods; and must be able to crouch crawl bend kneel and lift/move objects such as files boxes etc. The employee may be required to deal with distraught and/or angry persons and may be exposed to infectious diseases carried by children. The noise level in the work environment is acceptable to this particular environment and can vary depending upon daily activity but will remain within acceptable ranges.
Evaluation:
The School Counselor shall be evaluated per the terms of the East Valley Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement. The process shall include an evaluation of the employees performance of the above essential job functions and desired skills.
