Job Summary:

Performs moderately difficult and complex auditing work for state county and city jurisdictions of intra- and interstate businesses; or corporate income tax of in-state multi-state and muti-national taxpayers as assigned ensuring that policies procedures and regulations of the Department are consistent for all taxpayers. Determines tax liabilities prepares working papers and recommendations for the final audit memorandum; may review refund requests and makes determination to either approve or deny. Reviews and researches statutes administrative code and rulings to determine taxability. May represent the action of informal and informal hearings of tax protesters. Prevents disclosure of confidential tax information and fully documents audits using workpapers and maintains orderly audit files. Develops audit scopes objectives and procedures in accordance with generally-accepted auditing standards (GAAS) and government audit standards (GAS). May provide testimony at formal or informal hearings.

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona with occasional in office required meetings.

Job Duties:

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Under general supervision conducts audits (remote and field-based as assigned) of a moderately difficult and complex nature based on information requested through correspondence with taxpayers changes in calculation resulting from additional information or review of tax filings.
  • Examines financial records of a business (books returns worksheets etc.) subject to taxation; accounts for all factors affecting taxation of various kinds; verifies tax-related transactions as reported on financial documents; makes determinations; recommends the need for audits; may review refund requests for validity; prepares work papers for possible refunds/additional tax; maintains regular correspondence; and provides weekly reports.
  • Attends and represents the department at informal and formal hearings.
  • Explains audit assessments to taxpayers tax managers CPAs and attorneys for purposes of substantiation of reporting and conformance with
  • Arizona tax laws.
  • Identifies and fosters voluntary compliance to meet Arizonas reporting thresholds
  • Agency/Department Compliance & Continuous Improvement
  • Remains current on all laws regulations policies and best practices related to taxation through regular engagement in activities such as: self-directed research conferring with other practitioners and technical experts; subscriptions to regulatory/legal/industry newsletters and briefs; membership industry associations and attendance at meetings/events; and or participation in training and others continuing education opportunities.
  • Actively contributes to team and individual effectiveness through the following: -
  • Attends staff meetings and huddles of work unit or district; and may cascade and track information as indicated
    -Completes all required training in a timely manner.
    -Participates in assigned work teams as appropriate.
    -May complete periodic metrics projects huddle boards and reports as requested.
    -Prepares for and actively participates in 1:1 coaching with supervisor
  • Maximizes work processes and deliverables through lean principles within the Arizona Management System (AMS); and provides recommendations for process improvement and engages in continuous improvement efforts as assigned.

  • Knowledge of individual income corporate income transaction privilege and use tax fiduciary and withholding tax policy and procedures

    Abilities
  • Ability to clear a comprehensive background and clearance process that includes an Arizona tax compliance verification and a criminal
  • background check through the FBI via level one fingerprint clearance through the Arizona Department of Public Safety
  • Ability to work in a confidential manner ensuring information is shared with internal and external individuals in an appropriate manner
  • Ability to understand and solve problems by applying intermediate analytical skills to include collecting all the relevant information and data needed to address the problem; organizing classifying and synthesizing the data into fundamental issues; from the information identifying the most probable causes of the problem; reducing the information down into manageable components; identifying the logical outcomes from the analyses of the data collected; and identifying the options and solutions for addressing the problems analyzed.
  • Ability to travel 35% of the time within the Arizona state region to conduct field audits

Selective Preference(s):

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Any combination that meets the knowledge skills and abilities (KSA); typical ways KSAs are obtained may include but are not limited to: a relevant degree from an accredited college or university such as Bachelors Degree (e.g. B.A.) training coursework and work experience relevant to the assignment.
  • Minimum two (2) years related experience as an Auditor or equivalent experience
  • Bachelors degree in accounting or closely related field.
  • Experience with Continuous Improvement Six Sigma and/or LEAN
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish

Retirement:

State employees are required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) the State sponsored retirement contribution plan and the Long-Term Disability (LTD) program after a 27-week waiting period.
